Yea, I'm a Part-Time Car Jacker
Date of Review: Nov 19, 1999
Gosh, this game is fun. Yes, I know it's wrong, but doesn't feel good just robbing some sucker of his car? Then either A) running him over, B) shooting him in cold blood or C) blowing him up? Ahhh, yes friends, it is choices like these that make this game entertaining.
First things first, on the violence and whole moral issue : Yes, I know that killing cops and picking up hoes is wrong ; but, if you think that I am going to get out of traffic one day and pull someone out of their Porsche, then you know less about people than chimps do. Running from the police and doing crime is just so incredibly fun; it's not an angle most of us usually play from. With that said, let me briefly describe the whole premise of the game. You are a car jacker, and must carry out a number of jobs, ranging from (surprise!) stealing cars to planting bombs to doing blackmail to making hits. After every success, you are awarded cash from the boss; and after accumulating enough cash, you move on to the next city. The missions sometimes do get annoying (such as dumping cars into the harbor, not much fun) and repetitive (there is no savegame function within the game), but when you finally do get fed up with Master Ho's demands, you can just start killing the police.
The police in this game are moderately intelligent : they will attempt to run you off the road by hitting you and boxing you in. They will build roadblocks and if that doesn't work, chase you down on foot. Luckily for our hero, he is equipped with weapons strong enough that you will be reproducing the movie Heat in no time. It gets quite depressing, however, after you've killed about twenty of the bastards and they still rush you with their little pop guns when you have on two bulletproof vests and wield a flamethrower. Poor police.
This game does suffer from a lack of features, such as a save-game function and the ability to choose different perspectives of play. Even the control buttons feel unnatural and awkward at first. And although this game is very engaging, by the fifth or sixth city the same routine gets old: jack car, get job, kill people, run from police, die, start over. If there was some way to build toward something (other than the next level) that would add immensely to the game itself.
This game is brutally fun, if not a little guilt provoking. This is a perfect game for anyone to vent their road rage against cops, pedestrians, and the rest of society. Please, Just don't do it..for real.
