The 225s Rock!
Date of Review: Sep 21, 1999
The Grado SR225 is my personal favorite in the Grado line of fine headphones. These cans really rock. Great bass, liquid mids and fairly detailed highs are the characteristics of the 225s. Their ability to deliver the impact of the music is unrivaled - you will feel the punch of the kick drum as if you were sitting in front of the drummer! The bass is deep and in your face. Highs are not as detailed as with some other high end phones but still pretty good. I would say these are slightly dark overall.
Comfort is ok but not great. They now come with a foam pad that is slightly cupped. The new pads sound as good and are a little more comfortable than the original pads. They have a 6 ft cable terminated to a 1/4 plug. Grado makes an adapter to step it down to a mini for use with portable players. Their 32 ohm impedance makes them easy to drive. A headphone amp is beneficial to get optimum sound quality from the 225. With lesser sources the bass can become a little boomy and the detail is not what it can be.
These are an open design so use in quiet locations is recommended. Not for use in noisy environments or where others can be affected by the sound.
The best Rock and Roll headphones - for those who want the live experience! OK for Classical and Jazz but better with music that requires impact to engage the listener.
