Product Review

These cans rock!

by   jpr00703 ,   Aug 23, 2004

Pros:  Great rock-n-roll sound. Light weight. Sound great without special amplification. Good value amongst high-end cans.

Cons:  Build quality might be considered a little on the flimsy side.

The Bottom Line:  Between $150 and $400 the Grado 225s just can't be beat!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I did a lot of research before buying these headphones and have been extremely pleased with them. The sound is just amazing, even straight out of a portable CD player.

I've used several Sennheiser products and have read a million arguments about their high-end cans being more accurate than the Grados. However, one listen and you'll care less about technical details. These headphones just rock. If you listen mostly to Classical music, get the Senns and relax to their laid-back presentation. If you like rock-n-roll with a little punch in the sound, these are your headphones.

Like all headphones, they are a little uncomfortable after a while. However, they are extremely light weight and I have no problems listening for about 2 hours before I begin to notice any discomfort. In fact, I'd say they're darn near as comfortable as any other full-size headphone I've tried, including the Senns. The only difference is that the pads put a little pressure on your ears (or at least my big ears) instead of on your skull like other phones that go completely around your ears.

Break-in does make a difference. They sounded good out of the box, but I plugged them in to a spare stereo, threw in a CD and just let it play over and over for four days. After that, they sounded so good that I got giddy as a schoolgirl.

The Grados don't require a headphone amp, but I ordered a Pimeta anyway. I can't wait to try out the combination!
