Hours of Fun

I use this wonderful magazine for many things in the activity program in the nursing home where I work as the director of activities. The pictures are wonderful, and jar rusty memories. They encourage residents to tell their own stories relating to the pictures, and for myself and my children, the pictures and stories explain the story behind similar pictures that we have in photo albums saved by my grandparents who are no longer with us to tell the stories.

At the nursing home we play guessing games with the pictures, giving points to those who can guess who the movie star in the picture is, or what old model car is pictured.

Some of the articles and stories are inspiring and informative for me personally as they are written about a time period before my life began while other stories jog my own memories of my very earliest days spent living at my grandmothers house.

The stories and articles are all written by readers, about their personal lives many years ago. My residents can relate to many of the stories, and my reading outloud to them turns into a session of them sharing about their own lives and childhoods.

I also share this magazine with my children who are always curious about how things were when grandma was a little girl. I find that it helps my children appreciate their own history and heritage.

I would highly recommend this magazine to everyone, of all ages, but especially to those who visit loved ones in nursing homes. Often it is difficult to find things to talk about, especially with a loved one whos memory is failing, but with this magazine in hand, you will be able to encourage your aging loved one to converse and share.

It makes a wonderful gift for people of all ages.
