A Good Night Tale
Date of Review: Dec 13, 2001
The Bottom Line: Perfect bed time story, reads aloud well, and fun illustrations for kids.
We are always in the market for well-illustrated, well-written, bed time books. What mother of a two-year old ain't?
This charming book is inhabited by adorable watercolor dragons dressed in their jammies and clutching bed time toys and an oh so patients knight (wish I was married to him when bed time roles around!) Oh, and don't forget the horse, who is as kind as the knight! The illustrations by Jennifer Plecas are bright and interesting and not in the least scary ( bed time plus!) They match the test beautifully adding visual interest.
The story is easy to read aloud with lots of sound words and lots of repetition, so the book also makes a good early reader. My son quickly began "reading" along with me, using the visual cues from the illustrations, the sound words (clippety cloppety, thud, etc. which he seems to enjoy) and the repetition. The book is fun for kids and adults, who will quickly identify with the knight!
My son is a little over two and seems to undertand and enjoy the book perfectly. As I mentioned, it should be a good early reading book, despite some longer words, because of the repetition and good visual clues.
