Author's Review
I was first compelled to buy this album after hearing about it via one of my favorite webcomics Questionable Content. Well, me agreeing with the creator of QC on most music, I decided to check it out.
So, the first time I put this in, my attention was mildly held by The World At Large. I was blown away by Float On and I enjoyed the Pixies-esque Bury Me With It.
The rest of the album I did not care for at all. It was terrible. It was the most boring experience of my musical life. I put my CD player down, let down.
The next day, I grabbed my CD player when I was heading out, and I forgot to put in another CD. I was stuck with an album I really couldn't stand. Thank god I did that.
I decided to give it a second chance, knowing it would grow on me, like most of the music I listen to. Well, on about my fourth listen, I made a realization. This was one of the best albums that I've ever heard or ever will hear.
The album starts out with a brass band playing an intro, which leads into The World At Large which has an amazing guitar piece and an engaging melody.
The song ends with an extended note, that picks up in Float On. Then a drum machine kicks on and the note is cut off. The real drums come in, and the guitar strums. The Brock comes in on his guitar and belts out the opening lines, "I backed my car into a cop car the other day." It was quite unassuming for a song that would end in one of the greatest melodies ever written (which, by the way, is when Brock sings, "Alright already, we'll all float on.".)
The next song is Ocean Breathes Salty, with its amzing bridge, "When the earth folded in on itself, And said 'For your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldnt hold my breath.'". It's quite an amazing song.
Then comes the title track Bury Me With It. It's like something from the Pixies (Dead, to be precise). But, like Ocean Breathes Salty it has a very melodic and beautiful bridge, in which the title of he album is derived.
After that, comes the least accessible song on the album, Dance Hall. But, after a couple listens, it's growing on me.
Bukowski is the worst song on the album, sadly. But don't worry, it's still a great song. It has a memorable line, as well. "God, Who'd want to be such an a**hole?"
Then, you hear the horns again, but not as an intro to an album, but to a song. The Devil's Workday is a very strange song, but its quite a rewarding one. It seems to be from the point of view of the devil, describing the evil acts he commits. It has an entertaining banjo part, as well.
The View Is another great song.
Well, there are 6 more songs that you'll have to experience for yourself, because I'm tired of writing.
