Product Review

I am very happy with this unit

by   aromagal ,   May 30, 2009

Pros:  This A/C cools well for the space we need.

Cons:  Heavy unit, installation is tricky, but not too complicated or difficult.

The Bottom Line:  It does the job very well.  I recommend it.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Our bedroom has windows which face west.  Here in the Vancouver area the summer sun beats down on those windows till around 9pm, no fan is going to help cool the room before bed time.

We installed this unit.  It is in fact very heavy, but we didn't find it too much of a challenge.  In fact we bring it in during the winter (since we have such a long rainy season) and reinstall it in the mid-spring.  This is our second year with it and it still works like a hot-damn.

We elected not to use the opaque "filler" piece and cut our own piece of perspex to fit the "hole in the window" above the A/C unit.  I like the extra light and it looks much better from the outside too.

It isn't the most pretty A/C to look at, but it works very well.  We have a large bedroom and an good size ensuite bathroom as well as a walk-in closet and even though that A/C sit in the blazing sun (it is in a 2nd floor window so there are no tall trees or shrubs to offer any shade to the unit) it keeps us cool.  We only cool our bedroom in the house - so that we have a cool-zone when it is too hot and so that we can all sleep well.  Our two sons just bed down on the floor in our room too since there's plenty of room and their rooms aren't air conditioned.

I wouldn't want to be without it!  It cools really well with only moderate noise.

When it comes to the controls - it has of course the A/C setting where it cools and keeps the temperature you choose and runs continuously.

There is a fan only option.  This is one feature I don't like or use since even when you have the fan running and the "vent to outside air" it doesn't draw in fresh air from outside.  For instance - lets say the temperature drops overnight and is nice and cool and you want to draw in some of that nice fresh cool air - nope... not doing it.  The fan blows air around, yes, but doesn't draw it in well from the outside.

Then there is the energy save mode.   In this mode the unit comes on every 3 minutes or so and checks to see if the temperature is right - if it is - it turns off, if not - it runs to bring the temp down again and then turns off.  It cycles on and off all the time and is useful for us doing the day - but at night when you're trying to sleep it can be annoying.

Please note: The water hose installation instructions do come after the installation instructions in the booklet - but it needs to be done BEFORE you install the unit.  Also remember to tilt it out and down according to the instructions otherwise you will have water on the floor.

All in all a good buy and I'd totally do it again.
