Author's Review
I wonder. Has Glamour undergone a full-body makeover since 2000? Because I just started subscribing to the magazine in September of 2003 and I couldn't be happier with it, but my fellow reviewers don't seem to agree with me! If anyone is currently subscribing to Glamour and loves it, please add your review in spite of the many already published. If it has been revamped, it deserves a higher rating. If not... it still deserves a higher rating!
Or maybe it's just me.
I've read a couple of different fashion mags-- I'm not obsessed, but they make a nice read in an airport, for example. I've read Cosmopolitan, Elle, and countless teen 'zines such as Seventeen, YM, and Cosmo girl.
Glamour is by far my favorite out of all of these. Teen magazines are (go figure) pretty juvenile. You think Glamour has too many ads? Try reading Elle! As for Cosmo, I kind of see it as the stereotypical, slightly ditsy, material, leggy blond, as opposed to Glamour's beautiful, elegant, smart, down-to-earth brunette.
Sometimes my newest issue sits on my nightstand for a couple of days, but once I start reading it, I end up putting any other books on hold until I've perused it cover to cover.
Everything about Glamour draws me in. It has your usual "beautify yourself in ten minutes," "dress for your body type," and "how to go vintage for $200 or less" articles (which I love), feature stories of all kinds (from cancer to women in politics to the latest girl power movie), fun, sexy articles about love and men, advice for the women in the workforce, etc., etc., etc.
I love the celebrity profiles. Most of them are written with the ultimate goal of showing us that we are no different from these high-profile women; of taking these people off of their pedestals and letting the everyday woman feel like a star.
The articles are well-written, engaging, and generally informative as well. The pages are peppered with interesting facts and the layouts are pure eye candy. The material varies enough and accomplishes the difficult task of indulging the ditsy girl in you without neglecting your need for deeper reading material.
I think my favorite thing about Glamour is that it encourages you to love who you are, no matter what color/shape/size you are. Unlike Cosmo, it doesn't talk down to you; it treats you as a capable, fashion-aware woman and humbly offers tips to aid you in your busy, adventurous, romance-filled life.
I guess it all comes down to this question: which do you like better: blonds, or brunettes?
