Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

Date of Review:  Feb 24, 2000
Review: This album was actually first released in 1991 on Caroline Records, the re-release date of 1994 reflects Virgin Records taking over Caroline Records. I saw the Siva video in the middle of the night on MTV way back when, and immediately bought this...

Smashing Pumpkins Debut Album

Date of Review:  Aug 1, 2001
The Bottom Line: Gish contains some classic Pumpkins' songs, as well a few uninteresting songs. Any fan of grungy guitar driven rock should check it out.
Review: The Smashing Pumpkins released their first album Gish a few months before Nirvana's Nevermind hit number one. Gish album was a welcome change from the spandex wearing bands that were popular only a few short moments earlier.
For a while it held...

Great Album

Date of Review:  May 26, 2001
The Bottom Line: Buy this album if you have a spiritual side or if you enjoy great musicianship in rock music.
Review: This album is truly a work of art. I heard this album the week it was released. It's difficult to explain to people how original this album was when it came out. It came out right around the same time as Nirvana's "Nevermind". The sounds on Gish are...

The Road To Total Domination

Date of Review:  Nov 3, 2001
The Bottom Line: A must have for any Pumpkin fan, especially if you liked Siamese Dream and are looking for something rawer and heavier. Anyone who enjoys early 90's alt-rock will like this.
Review: Steps for musical domination:

1. Form a band
2. Sign on to a indie record label
3. Release album
4. Switch to major label
5. Headline a major music festival
6. Release album(s), one of which must be a double album...

The Pumpkins come out of mother rock's uterus and into the light

Date of Review:  Jan 18, 2005
The Bottom Line: For those who loved the Pumpkins' first two albums, here is an essential purchase
Review: While most famous for the two alternative classics, 1993's Siamese Dream and 1995's double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the Smashing Pumpkins beyond the 1995 release are somewhat over looked. The flare that truly made them special,...

Good dog...

Date of Review:  May 17, 2000
Review: From the drumming intro of 'I am one', to the hushed echo of 'Daydream', "Gish" is a thoroughly impressive grungish rock cd, and certainly one of the most vital releases of The Smashing Pumpkins. Like "Siamese Dream", Billy Corgan hadn't had enough...

Pumpkins yet to be smashed

Date of Review:  Jun 29, 2002
The Bottom Line: Any fan of the Pumpkins needs this to put the band in perspective. Anyone who enjoys rock, and/or the feel of bands in their early formation should enjoy as well.
Review: Billy Corgan, a lonely little Chicago boy, had formed a band, and by god, he'd make it the best damn band ever!

From the psychedelic rock of Rhinoceros, to the controlled sonic chaos of Siva, to the acoustic strum of Daydream, the Pumpkins...

Gosh, Gish is Great!

Date of Review:  Aug 15, 2001
The Bottom Line: I recommend this to anyone who likes alternative music. It sounds clean and polished, and its still good and dirty where it needs to be.
Review: Sorry about the title, I just had to do that. Anyway, few people seem to remember that Gish by Smashing Pumpkins was released before "Nevermind". In any event, to compare the two albums is not going to happen in this particular review. "Nevermind"...

Gish: The Words Really Aren't Important

Date of Review:  Jan 20, 2004
The Bottom Line: Like Smashing Pumpkins? Consider yourself a semi-fan? Then Gish is worth checking out. Maybe not the place to start, but a fine enough place to end up.
Review: Wielding an irrepressible gift for melody and arrangement, Billy Corgan burst on to the rock scene with 1991's Gish. Of course there were other players in the success of Smashing Pumpkins, but it was always Corgan who drove the Chicago-based...

Eww...Something Smells Gishy

Date of Review:  Feb 6, 2004
The Bottom Line: Only for diehard Pumpkins fans
Review: With all honesty, this early Pumpkins stuff doesn't impress me at all. Where as their latter day albums have their fair share of good songs but unfortunately were suffocated with inexcusable, pointless filler, Gish suffers from crap songwriting...
