Product Review

For Tweens!

by   Natasha37 ,   Apr 10, 2001

Pros:  Models in most articles/ads look like real girls

Cons:  none

The Bottom Line:  Girl's Life is a positive, information packed, age-appropriate magazine for preteen girls with the added bonus of models throughout the magazine who look like real kids, not models.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

This magazine is perfect for preteen girls. One of the biggest pros is the photographs of real girls throughout the magazine -- all sizes, shapes and colors. Although my daughter, 12, likes to flip through Seventeen and YM, this magazine reflects normal girls her age with braces and no make-up.

There are quite a few Q & A columns -- one dealing with body questions (periods, pimples, hairy legs), one focusing on family or parent issues and another for questions about boys and best friends. All information is frank, but age appropriate.

Articles follow the same topics -- girls views on their families (being raised by a grandparent or having a sibling with a disability), how to get along with friends and health and beauty advice (this issue had info on Natural Cosmetics, an article about a girl who worked on a project to uncover retailers who sold cigarettes to minors and a story about young mountain climbers).

Also included are the usual reviews on music, books, television/movies and web sites and fashion pages relevant to this age group.

I like the fact that although there is a one or two-page column about celebrities, it is NOT the focus of the entire magazine. The ads are also not overwhelming. This is an information packed magazine that you don't have to worry about your kids reading.
