Gibson SG Special

Date of Review: Nov 4, 2000

The Gibson SG Special is the best guitar available for it's price. It's got a great feel, great look, and most importantly, a great sound.

This guitar has a retail price of about $999, but you can very easily find one for $650 or less. The tuners are not the best quality, but will work. If you leave the guitar out of the case as do I, it stays in perfect tune. But, putting it in and taking it out of a case usually takes the guitar out of tune. If you play a lot of live gigs,I recommend replacing the tuners. The pickups on this guitar are great. They sound great and fit the style of hard rock, blues, country, you name it. The bridge and action are great and it is very easy to play. The neck felt very thick to me when I first got it, but you get used to the feel. The controls and knobs are in perfect position and easily accessible. One gripe: I hate where the input jack is. It is right in front next to the knobs instead of on the underside.

This guitar is perfect for any style, but best for hard rock and metal. I recommend playing it through a Marshall amp. I have tried it with several amps including Fender, Crate, Rogue, Randall, and Mesa Boogie but Marshall sounds the best.

It's a very dependable guitar. I have had mine for three years and have had no problems yet. I recommend playing it yourself, handling it yourself and plugging it into various amps to see what suits you best.
