"Gentleman" is an absolute journey full of love, lust, anger, disappointment and regret.
I've had this CD for years and pulled it out again in the past couple of years and it's been in my frequently played list ever since. How could I ever have put it away?
"Gentleman", released in 1993, is one of those albums you can listen to and hear the early 90's in it. The roaring, rebellious guitar, experimentation with guitars and strings, and that soulful voice of Greg Dulli's that makes you cringe but you can't stop listening.
Every song on this CD is complete in emotion. It beings gently with "If I Were Going", then the title track number two grabs you in, pulls you, and puts you under Dulli's spell. The CD speaks of relationships, inner battles with drugs and alcohol and battles between those two. The lyrics of the songs plead with one another, begging and crying...then they forcefully push you away. It's truly amazing and if you were a fan of Nirvana or the Smashing Pumpkins, this CD (and most of AW's albums) is the perfect blend of that angst, experimentation and great lyrics (i.e. Smashing Pumpkins style), but in a more mature manner. Give it a few spins...you'll love it.
As a matter of fact, I love the angst and energy so much that I often listen to this as I exercise...it keeps you going and makes you feel rushes of emotion. The least favorite song of mine on this is "My Curse" which isn't sung by Dulli but a good friend of his, a woman...yet somehow, this song GOES with the CD...it has that bitter anger yet sadness.
Just a really amazing blend.
