Almost perfect,... one big blemish. Waiting for a fix.

We purchased this model on 11/17/07 after an a three week ordeal with an LG's LFX25950TT we purchased from Home Depot on 10/30/07. I will write a review of the LG under that model #.

This GE seems to be as good if not better than the LG LFX259xx series, in almost every feature and category except one,... the craftsmandship put into applying the stainless steel skin to the doors. There's a visible and model-wide problem with warping, but the issue has already been covered here AND there is a fix from GE (I've been told).

It seems well built (except for the warping doors) and offers more than enough food storage flexibility. Coming from the LG, I was a little weary of the ice maker being mounted in the upper left corner of the fresh food section. However, after a day or so, it turns out it doesn't steal as much functional space as I thought it would. Mounted to the side of the ice maker is a 1/4 width flip up shelf that makes it easy to modify interior space for quick storage of tall things like wine and those 2 and 3 litre soda bottles. A nice touch given the LG's open space would have you tussle with making slightly more permanent adjustments by repositioning those sometimes hard to adjust 1/2 width shelves. In addition to the standard 1/2 width crispers, the full width deli draw on the bottom is a plus, allowing 2 temperature control settings,... Produce & Deli. However, this model's corporate twin, the Samsung model # RF267AARS/XAA offers three temperature settings,... Produce, Deli & Quick Chill. Also the Samsung offers another feature the GE doesn't,... pull out shelving!

This model also sports independent evaporators and fans for the fresh food and freezer sections. This means air doesn't pass between the fresh food section and the freezer. A good thing! Samsung calls it "Twin Cooling" and GE calls it "Climate Keeper",... same thing, same approach, and same technology.

I wish the display would not go blank after 10 seconds, I'd like to be able to glance at the unit from anywhere in the kitchen and tell what it's up to. In order to get this unit to report it's status, you have to get up, walk to it, and physically ask it to report by pressing a temp adjust button. I do however like that the temp readout does do double duty. When you ask it to report, it first shows the temp it was set to, then switches after a moment to report the current or actual internal temperature. Another nice touch the LG misses. If an LG owner would want to check their internal temp, they would by forced to stick a thermometer in the box. If only the display would stay on and not turn itself off after ten seconds.

The bottom freezer section is standard fair, nothing there except that GE doesn't use those annoying wire baskets for the main bottom or secondary upper bins. The baskets seem larger than those of the LG series as well. One other thing that puzzled me is that GE doesn't include an egg try with their model but Samsung does. But I think the cool blue LED interior lighting makes that easier to swallow,...beside, I kept the egg tray from the LG and it fits just fine.

The ice/water dispenser is designed to force you to load up your glass at a slight angel (which most of us do anyway). I have found that this makes it easier to load taller glasses without a bigger dock, and it seems to cut down on ice cubes deciding they wanna dance on your hardwood kitchen floor too. The dispenser is also positioned higher up on the door than on the LG and the other brands in the class. I don't have to bend and peek at all to make certain I got a good aim with the glass. I can also fill my coffer pot with the GE, something I couldn't even begin to do with the LG (excepting the LFX5980ST). It would have been nice if the read out numbers, functions and icons were done in blue like on the Samsung as opposed to that ugly 1970's digital LED green,... just be happy that they weren't done in the uglier 1960's digital LED red. I'd like to be able to see at a glance from ANYWHERE in the kitchen, the settings and internal temps. It's a pain having to go over to it and physically push buttons to get a report. Oh,... I already mentioned that.

All-n-all, it's about as good as we're going to get in this price range. As for design, technology and utility,... it bested the others I've shopped it against. Even that $3200 LG that after putting it under a little scrutiny, is nothing more than a dressed up LFX25950 ($1799 bottom of this LG series) with blue lights, fancy doors and a sexier dispenser and control panel.

I'm still not sure which door seal approach is superior. Some say the approach with the swivel center magnetic strip used by the GE is, and some say the sans magnetic strip approach as used by the LG is. My first impression is that the seals on the LG would fail first. There's a lot of friction involved in creating a air-tight seal in that approach. The rubber gaskets of the left and right doors actually meet, and aided by magnets form the seal.

I would highly recommend the GE PFSS6PKWSS, especially now that they've fixed the waving steel doors (X'ed fingers).
