GPS for the masses.
Date of Review: Apr 21, 2008
The Bottom Line: If you do not know much about GPS - buy this one. Ease of use, quality, and price make this product hard to beat.
I got this GPS at a very interesting time in my life.
I was traveling 2000 miles across the country when I ran into a snowstorm in upstate NY. While in lodging for a few days I shopped around for a GPS.
I was far away from home, and being less than a third of a way through my trip, the prospect of looking at google maps directions all the time was looking less and less attractive.
I was ready to overpay and get a decent GPS, but to my surprise Staples was selling this unit for 200 dollars, when Walmart was sold out and Staples had 250 pricetag.
I bought it, it was truly plug and play, and was able to plug in routes and travel with ease the rest of my trip.
Nuvi 200 was also a recommendation from a soldier in my unit who installs these things for a major retailer.
Now that I've told you my fairytale, lets let me share positives and negatives.
1. true plug and play is definite plus.
2. ease of use.
3. standard usb cable to connect it to the computer
4. customizable: vehicle, language, speech all top notch at no extra costs.
Special note on speech. It sounds natural, native voice, pleasant and really impressed exchange students when I had their language on it.
5. accurate maps. Only in a few places I got issues with roads showing up that did not exist, and when that happens, just driving forces nuvi to find an alternate route.
6. long battery life
7. can be used on foot walking around the city.
8. gives you distance traveled, speed, max speed, etc.
9. has a large database of shops and stores, so you can quickly zero in to where you need to go.
10. easy to input an address, so you can return with ease.
Negatives - there are not too many.
I think free map updates would be nice, special services at no cost like weather, road conditions and traffic would be good too, but you are buying technology from the future, and at 200 dollars it is made for the masses.
