Author's Review
I am a new police officer in a medium sized city and there are many parts of town that I don't have the faintest idea how to get around in,...so,...as I often need to get somewhere fast, I wanted a GPS that was accurate and easy to use.
Also, I do not have my own patrol car yet so I change vehicles very often,...therefore,.. I needed a unit that could be easily moved from one vehicle to another.
Garmin's i5 definitely meets those requirements and it has far surpassed my expectations.
It is ready to use right out of the box. This is no exaggeration. I am often technologically-challenged. This GPS could honestly be operated by a grade school child. It is 100% user-friendly.You can be up and running as soon as you get out to your car and remove the unit from the box. All of the USA and CANADA is already pre-loaded. You do not have to download anything!
I have been using it for a month now and it is EXTREMELY accurate and the voice prompts are clear and do not sound like some of those horrible computer generated voices you hear from some electronics. A side note: You can choose American or English accent plus about a dozen other European languages.
Some folks criticize the small screen size,...but,...I think the small screen and the small size of the unit is one of the biggest draws of the i5. The screen is plenty for the average user and surprisingly detailed. Additionally you can change the screen view from 3-D Overview, North Up, or Facing Forward mode. This is a matter of preference so the choice is nice to have.
As for portability,...I don't think you can beat this GPS. The fact that it can run on 2 AA batteries is a great plus in case the cigarette lighter is not an option in your car. You also don't have to worry about an permanent internal battery going out on you.(a cigarette lighter power source comes with the unit which is how I power it,...I keep batteries in it as a back up)
The suction cup mount is GREAT!!! I use it in both my personal vehicle and in my patrol car and it transfers from one to the other almost effortlessly.
Initially I thought that I wanted a touch-screen GPS but now that I have used the i5's roller wheel,...I much prefer it. I also don't have to worry about dirtying up the screen.
I have found it to be perfect for my personal trips around town and it has even taught me a few shortcuts that I was previously unaware of.
For work it is a lifesaver. I can get anywhere in town quick and easy,...even to parts of town I have never been to before. This Garmin is great for anyone who drives for a living.
It locates satellites in seconds usually. The longest I've had to wait is maybe a minute or two during very heavy cloud/tree coverage. Once locked on it doesn't loose reception unless you go into a covered parking area, and if it does loose reception the voice prompt immediately lets you know. Once you have a clear sky,it will relocate satellite reception quickly.
I have not needed an extra external antenna at all! The internal antenna located within the unit is very powerful and I am amazed at how powerfully it works. Remember,.. this is a tiny unit. I have had to buy nothing extra. This unit comes totally ready to use. The only thing I bought was a 7 dollar camera case from Wal-mart to carry it in.
I know that this review sounds to be "all-praising", but his is my true feeling about this GPS. I recommend it without hesitation.
It is true that there are more advanced units out there, but for the price,..you'll be hard pressed to beat the i5.
