Technology-Packed Head Unit

by   rxkevin ,   Apr 18, 2007

Pros:  Sharp screen, navigation, bluetooth, ability to store 400+ CD's on the unit.

Cons:  Installation difficult because of the speed sensor hookup, owners manual could be better written.

The Bottom Line:  If you can get past the smaller screen, you will be amazed by this feature-packed unit. I have owned the unit for around a week now without regrets.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this unit to replace a factory unit in my '99 Ford F-150. I did a lot of research before buying. I liked the navigation and the ability to store multiple CD's on the unit's hard drive. I also added the bluetooth adaptor and Sirius radio (not activated yet). I could not decide initially between this unit and Kenwood and Pioneer double-din (double size) radios with larger screens. I voted no on Pioneer because of the inability to play DVD's while driving. The new Kenwood was nice but pricey. I also decided that a larger screen might draw too much attention both when driving and when parked. The JVC KD-NX5000 seemed the perfect fit. The local professionals had a hard time installing this unit because it requires a wire from the radio to be run to a "speed sensor" wire in the vehicle. The installer had to call several dealerships, JVC, and another installer to find where this elusive speed sensor wire was. (A side note--if you don't know how to find a speed sensor wire, don't dare try to install this unit yourself.) Be sure your installer knows what he's getting in to. When everything was all hooked up, it worked like a charm. The sound is crystal clear. The unit has enough power for me. The bluetooth was well worth the extra $125. While driving, if my cell rings, I do not have to touch a thing. The unit answers automatically, showing the caller ID on the unit. Sound comes over the speakers and all I do is speak out loud. When finished, the unit disconnects automatically. My wife and friends think this feature is way too cool. The navigation is amazing and extremely accurate. The installer commented on a test drive that the navigation was better than that of the Pioneer systems. That was nice to hear. The voice navigation functions well, offering a choice between a male or female navigation voice. I have loaded five CD's onto the hard drive without any problems. For quicker loading, convert all files to MP3 before loading. Full CD's in MP3 format load in around 2 minutes...pretty fast. WAV files require the actual time of the song to load. At first, I thought I was doing something wrong because my CD was taking so long to load. All files were in WAV format. After converting to MP3, the CD loaded in around 2 minutes. My kids like to watch movies from the second seat while I am driving. The viewing screen is clearly smaller than the bigger 6.5-inch displays, but I feel that all the extra features make this unit a great buy (I don't work for JVC). I paid $1200 for the unit plus bluetooth plus Sirius installed.
