Great for walking, running, biking, hiking, skiing and even geocaching
Date of Review: May 26, 2008
The Bottom Line: A convenient, powerful and worthy unit for almost any non-automotive use of GPS technology at an affordable price!
My wife bikes and rollerblades a lot and would use my handheld Lowrance IFinder GO to track her speed and distance. Despite being a pretty reliable GPS (see my review) and all, she found that as it shook with her movement it would become inaccurate (i.e. have gaps in her track or say she went 60mph for a split second), so I bought her this as a combined birthday/Mother's Day present.
It has a lot of great features to track your progress and has customized screens for running, biking, and "other" (which shows an icon of a skier, but is presumably for activities like rollerblading as well). It is very easy to adjust lap lengths and use the software that comes with it to keep track of everything.
But most importantly, it conveniently goes on your wrist and has excellent satellite reception and accuracy, even indoors! To be honest, it goes on a little "short" on many wrists, the box comes with an "extender" to take care of that.
The biggest surprise was it's use for geocaching! My Lowrance actually died after over 2 years of use and I used the "Navigation" function to hunt for caches. While the map is very basic (no locations or topo.....just shows you vs. the waypoint like the basic Etrex model, which is good enough.....for a price you can buy maps for this unit though), I found it to be far more accurate at getting me to the caches than my old unit ever was! And you can download waypoints to it (a major weakness of the iFinder Go), making it even more convenient. One weakness if you are really really heavily into geocaching is that it will only take 100 waypoints vs. the 500 or 1000 of most other units, but for the level of caching I do it worked fine. I loved it so much I ordered a 2nd Forerunner for myself as having it on my wrist is so much more convenient than having to hold the GPS or have it on my neck via a lanyard.
So whatever you use if for, you can't really go wrong with this device, especially since the prices are starting to go south of $150.
