Life Just Got More Interesting ~~ The Game of Life PC Version
Date of Review: Mar 29, 2000
The Bottom Line: If you like the board game, you will love the PC version!
If you like the "board" game version of "The Game of Life", you will love the PC version!! I recently got this game through a Promotion offered by General Mills Cheerios Cereal and Chumbo.com for a $1.99. I figured what did I have to lose? Well, it turns out my whole family loves this game. We are a family of four that enjoys playing all kinds of games together. We usually play the board games, but lately have been venturing out to play PC games as a family. Hey it has brought us closer, literally, four people crowded around a computer monitor, it's a riot!
"The Game of Life" is like the board version in that you pick your car, choose to go down the career or college path, buy insurance and get married. The goal of the game is the same, to be the one with the most money, only it is a lot more entertaining trying to reach that goal.
You start the game by choosing whether to play the Classic or Enhanced version, picking your car and your character. You spin the wheel to see who will go first, then you are off in these really cool convertible cars! You move around the board from the view that you are actually in the car. As you spin and land, you are treated to some really great graphics and music. In the PC version, you travel through the decades and the car changes as you hit a new decade as does the background music. Much to our kids dismay, my husband and I found ourselves breaking into song as they played music to some of our old time favorites! You experience the highs and lows of "life" as in the board game, such as having a child, buying a house, a car accident, a trip to the Bahamas, a fire, the stock market going down, etc. If you chose the Classic version, you get "Life tiles" and in the Enhanced version, you get to play "Life's Little Games". These games are games of chance that can net big bucks or nothing at all.
The only bad thing I can think about this game is that your kids will be asking to play it all the time! In our house non-educational games are played only on game days/nights, so the kids are constantly asking if it's time for a game day/night!! Okay, I guess it really isn't such a bad thing, they are choosing to spend time with their parents!!
The game does run long, so if you are looking for a "quick" game, this is not it.
