Product Review

Excellent Construction Design but Undesirable Materials and Controls

by   nontoxicusa ,   May 21, 2007

Pros:  Very Quiet, large stainless basket for portable, lint filters, two useful buttons, nice engineering

Cons:  too many automatic settings requiring override; plastics, components have strong gas-off; Made overseas; expensive

The Bottom Line:  This machine has strong reeks (toxic for me) and complicated electronics, but if not a concern for you - probably the better of two sink-hookup portables on the market

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

The actual number of the machine I bought was the WSLP1100HWW - but I figured the HWW probably refers to the color. This machine looks identical. Since one other review is so old, there could be some minor technical differences. Mine did not have the pull-out levelers or roller locks. My guess is that now they only have levelers on the so-called "stationary" model, the WSLS1100HWW, (the second S is for "stationary") but according to the GE website, I should have gotten the roller locks, but did not. That did not bother me because the machine did not vibrate much and probably did not need them.
The machine I bought was mechanically designed and engineered very well. It is quiet, has nice wheels, and minutes-remaining digital LED. It has lots of nice features built into the physical construction. It has two useful controls, a spin only (for extra spins and shorter drying time) and a pause-continue button.
However, it is made in Thailand, which means it spent weeks in a fumigated shipping container. Not a good machine if you have chemical sensitivities. The plastics and/or components inside are very acrid reeking too. After using it, I got a headache.
Unfortunately, upon power-on, it defaults to its one-touch load-sensing cycle, which automatically selects water level, temperature, and cycle time, all of which you can override, of course.
However, in my opinion, this one-touch feature is a useless marketing device that requires expensive electronic sensors, makes washing more complicated, and an unnecessary reason for expensive repairs, if it malfunctions.
Changing cycles will change water temperatures, which you can also override.
This machine can be connected with two hoses, separate hot and cold lines. However, if you are using the kitchen sink faucet adapter, automatically changing the water temperature makes no sense, because the machine gets water from one line that connects to the cold water inlet on the machine (the hot water inlet is capped) and you will always have to remember to reset the water-temp to cold. When using the sink-adapter, the desired water temperature is controlled with the sink faucet, not the machine.
