Author's Review
A once in a lifetime windfall allowed replacement of a 8 year old kitchen that was equipped with standard housing tract appliances. The only restriction was that the products chosen must be GE.
Decisions, decisions.
The main goal of the kitchen appliance remodel was to get the entire kitchen in black or black with stainless steel accents. With that goal in mind, all of the black GE dishwashers were studied to see which one would be the best fit for our new kitchen.
Since the household consisted of only 2 adults, some of the more family friendly features such as Plastics Wash or Childproof Locks were not a concern, but with winter cooking requiring stock pots or entertaining requiring stemware and serving bowls the narrowing down process was pretty easy. The black GE Profile PDW9900N was an easy choice.
GE PDW9900N Built-in Dishwasher
The first thing you notice after the sleek black profile is the huge capacity inside. This dishwasher is called a Tall Tub which has more space than the tub capacities called Giant because the interior uses more space down low than other dishwashers, adding approximately 5 of space, but requiring more bending to load the bottom rack than other machines. By using the previously unused lower spaces you add capacity without ruining your counter lines.
Once you quit looking at how much room you have, you notice all of the features in the touchpad at the top of the door, hidden when the dishwasher is closed.
From left to right you have:
· Time Remaining Display
· Cycle Selections
o Antibacterial Cycle (95 min)
o Cookware Cycle (70 min)
o Normal Cycle (65 min)
o Speed Cycle (49 min)
o China Cycle ((35 min)
o Plastic Cycle (105 min)
o Single Rack Wash (60 min)
o Rinse Only (10 min)
· 1-24 hour Delay
· Added Heat
· Pre Wash
· Heated Dry
One simplifying feature of this dishwasher is that it remembers the last cycle you used and wont change unless you change the cycle choice.
A really convenient feature is that you can fill up a dispenser with dishwasher soap ם small bottle, or about half of an economy size- and you get about 18 loads before the Smart Dispense light is illuminated when you are low and need to refill in the big Smart Dispense soap holder. One note, to open the Smart Dispense dispenser in the dishwasher door, you have to push down while turning, but since this is a Tall Tub model, you need to be pretty flexible to have the door down and pushing down while turning to open. Fortunately the Rinse Aid dispenser is just a quarter twist counter clockwise to open and another quarter turn to close.
The above mentioned are great features, but what about my least favorite part- actually having to load the machine? Not bad. Not self-loading, but trying to figure out how best to fit a pot, bowl, stemware is not a problem.
Tall champagne glasses can fit in the stemware holders on the top rack, while huge stockpots can sit on the very low bottom shelf since there is no wash tower in the center of the bottom rack. Tall drinking glasses fit on the sides of the top rack also, while there is a lid that comes down on them to hold your large spoons, spatulas and ladles. The top rack is adjustable to fit taller items either on the top (plastic bowls) or adjusted to fit taller items on the bottom (colanders and stock pots)
The 3-part flatware and lid holder divides into 3 separate pieces or clicks together to form one large piece depending on your washing needs, and removes entirely when you have to clean up large dishes after cooking for a party.
Other Notes
The GE Profile PDW9900N dishwasher went in the place where another 24 machine came out. Installation was done without any problems.
This GE Profile is also Energy Star compliant,
This model is one of the quietest models available. The dishwasher in the kitchen isnt heard at all while watching television a few steps away in the very tiny house. This dishwasher has the QuietPower7 feature, which is 47 dB, compared to the others with QuietPower5 that had noise levels of 50dB.
Recommendations
While Im admittedly a brand-snob, I was impressed by the features and functions of the GE Profile PDW9900N, and am glad that the almost $1400 price tag that I didnt have to pay for proved a worthy competitor to my favorite brand.
