What we like:
This dishwasher has a sanitize feature and cleans dishes well. You do need to pre-rinse, and soak dishes with hardened or baked-on food, but dishes with few exceptions come out shiny and clean if we do this.
It has a fairly large capacity (though there are others much larger) and has easy-to-use controls with mulitple settings:
Rinse only
China crystal
Normal wash
Cookware
Anti-bacteria
Delay hours
Added heat
Heated dry
I always use the "anti-bacteria" with "added heat" settings, which work well! The delay is nice for washing at night, since this machine is somewhat noisy, but this has a drawback if your machine decides to stop pumping water and still turns on the heating element, as ours did. More on this later.
The racks inside fold down to accommodate most any shape item. There is not much clearance room on the top or bottom rack as compared with higher-end models, but for comparable models it has similar clearance.
The water dispenser for the bottom rack is at an angle, allowing you to put tall items on the left side of the dishwasher. This is a nice feature, allowing me to put even my tall cookie sheets in the dishwasher.
The dishwasher looks nice also - we like the stainless steel, and though you must use actual stainless steel cleanser to make it shine properly, it is otherwise easy to clean. It does get caked-on stuff around the inside rim, which is the only part that is not easy to clean.
What we don't like:
We have had two problems in the 2 years we've owned this dishwasher.
1 - When we first bought it, it was apparently missing a seal, and when we turned it on water leaked out the bottom, ruining our brand new hardwood floor. GE fixed the problem and compensated us the cost of fixing the floor, so we were satisfied with their service.
2 - Recently the dishwasher has stopped running water, although the heating element still turns on, so the plastic on the inside of the door has actually warped from the heat sans water. We're lucky a fire didn't start, since I usually run the dishwasher at night when we're asleep for the noise (it's not very loud, but I'm a light sleeper). I strongly feel there should be some kind of safety sensor and automatic turnoff for this.
As for the breakdown, it took 2 tries for the techs to 1)determine yes, the machine is broken, and order the necessary parts; and 2) to install the part on a separate visit.
Seems to me they should come prepared with possible replacement parts rather than making me miss two days of work instead of one. They could also have asked more questions over the phone to troubleshoot the issue, helping them decide what parts to bring, but they didn't do this. This wastes my time and theirs.
On another note, we have several GE appliances, and we have not had good experiences with service. I won't get into details, but I think the fact we've had multiple service calls on 4 out of 5 GE appliances says a lot about product quality.
However, for just this product, I am happy as long as it's working! But the service calls are a major inconvenience. They are in 5-hour blocks, like the cable company. I don't have to tell you how annoying that is, especially when they no-show, which GE techs have done to us multiple times.
