Choose a different oven

The microwave that came with our house (a Sharp sensor model) finally quit. I chose this oven of same wattage as the old one because:

1) A certain consumer magazine gave GE good marks for reliability;

2) It has a cooking sensor;

3) It's available in almond, to match our range.

But after installing and using it, I would choose a different model next time.

Installation Problem
The installation instructions that come with the oven are generic, with a serious omission for this model: If you want to be able to remove the top grille (to install charcoal filter or change light bulb), you'd better remove the two screws *on top of* the oven BEFORE you install it--you can't reach them once the oven is up against your cabinet. Questionable design, and really unforgivable to leave that detail out of the installation instructions. I contacted GE service and they did give me correct information after a couple of days. By that time I'd figured it out from Samsung user guide.* I've notified GE service to update their instructions, but they've taken no action after 3 weeks.

Use Problems
1) Unreliable sensor / faulty design. I pressed the Popcorn button, walked away for a couple of minutes, and returned to find my kitchen filling with awful-smelling smoke. The microwave display was flashing "Sensor Error" and incredibly, the microwave was still cooking full blast. Given that I successfully popped about a hundred bags of popcorn in my old microwave without ever having a sensor error, I was disappointed the oven had a sensor error on only its third bag. But what really makes me angry is that the microwave didn't stop cooking when the sensor error happened. I was lucky to get back to my kitchen when I did to manually stop the microwave. The popcorn was a charred stinking mess. The smell took several days to finally leave the kitchen.

2) Defrost doesn't work as well as the old microwave. Seems to take longer, and doesn't thaw as evenly.

3) Toward the end of cooking, there's often an irritating rattling noise. I'm not sure, but think it's related to the turntable.

More negatives:
1) Very limited selection of sensor cooking options. I was hoping for a "seafood" button like the old oven had, no such luck. (I did check owner's manual before ordering, but it's so generic it was impossible to tell what options this particular oven offers.)

2) Charcoal filter is optional extra, while competing ovens include it.

3) Range light is fairly dim and yellow even at high setting.

On the plus side:
1) Oven looks good (subjective, but it works in our kitchen.)
2) Blower fan is fairly quiet.

Bottom Line
I can't trust the sensor in this oven, so wouldn't pay for that feature next time. I preferred our old Sharp microwave.

* This oven appears to be made by Samsung. There's a Samsung sticker on the blower and the user guide for Samsung SMH7185BG told me where to find screws to remove top grille, while GE's own printed instructions were useless.
