I bought this microwave as a gift for my sister. I think I paid about 59.99 for it at Wal-Mart. The main things I was looking for was a small microwave that did not require a lot of power. I wanted something that appeared to be durable and could last for years. I wanted it to have a turn table because I know from experience that microwaves without them, they just don’t cook the food as fast or efficiently. Lastly I wanted it to be easy to clean.
The reason this microwave had to be small and durable was because it would be used in the desert of Iraq. You see I bought it for my sister to take to Iraq with her when she deployed with the National Guard in 2004. She works in an office ordering parts for the maintenance department. That is why she knew she would have access to electrical power.
The food in the Army is ok, but it is not like home, if you know what I mean. So being able to take her mini fridge and a small microwave would allow her the option of making tasty treats like home. Her commander allowed everyone to bring movies to watch on the computer for movie night. With the popcorn that my sister would make in her microwave it give everyone a taste of home.
From home we would mail care packages crammed into a flat rate mailer box. Each box would contain a large variety of microwave foods that could be prepared in a few minutes. Here at home we take microwaves for granted but to the soldiers in my sisters unit this was a special thing that brought comfort in the war zone.
My sister wrote me and everyone in her unit thanked us for the microwave especially at Christmas time. She noted just one thing about the microwave is that it would have been nice if it had a button to add minutes instead of just thirty seconds at a time.
Overall the microwave has lasted for five years now. It must be built pretty sturdy to withstand the dust storms of Iraq and the constant use from day to day. After returning from Iraq my sister gave the microwave to my mom for her new cabin. She no longer needed it because she had a big microwave at home already and did not need two. She however it would be useful for our mom who did not have one and needed a smaller one for just herself.
