A Great Little Microwave

by   jkerm ,   Mar 5, 2007

Pros:  It lasts, comes with many features, and it is inexpensive.

Cons:  It has a small interior and the defrost mechanism is poorly designed.

The Bottom Line:  It makes a great dorm microwave or use for re-heating food.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

For years, I had an old Ammana Microwave which was a work horse and probably the best microwave you could buy. After the Ammana, I bought an assortment of microwaves which lasted for about a year.

I bought this GE JES735WJ 700 Watts Microwave Oven to replace one that hadn't even lasted a year. That was three years ago, and this sweet baby has been giving us great service.

We don't cook in a microwave, but we do use it to re-heat already cooked foods or to warm tea and coffee. I honestly don't know how to live without it. We are big tea drinkers and we like it hot. After tea has steeped, more often than not, it is too cool to enjoy. Once you know the length of time to run the microwave, the tea is perfect. All microwaves vary and you must learn your microwave's time table.

This microwave is not really meant for heavy cooking. With 700 watts, it is pretty slow but I like that feature because it is easier to control the time and not over cook the food. It also has auto times for popcorn, beaverages, re-heats and a 30 second auto timer which is just perfect for tea or coffee.

I haven't been thrilled with the defrost timer as most foods are partially cooked when set on auto timer.

The microwave is our kitchen clock and it is accurate and rarely needs to be reset which is quite easy to do.

The inside capacity is small and I wouldn't recommend it for cooking a meal. The capacity limit is 6 pounds which will handle a medium sized mixing bowl. Raw Chicken should never be prepared in a microwave so the 6 pound limit is okay.

It comes with a glass turntable and it makes it easy to clean up spills. We usually place a tea cup on the outside edge rather than in the middle of the turn table because it seems to heat better that way.

All foods should be covered when heating to avoid splattering. Splattered food reduces the cooking ability of a microwave as the splattered food draws microwaves to it.

If you want a little workhorse to re-heat food, pop popcorn or heat frozen dinners then I recommend this microwave. We have had good luck with it and we have been happy with its performance.
