Heads up on Crushing Ability

We've owned this unit for a year now and had owned a similar GE unit for many years prior to this one. We were looking to upgrade to something that might be just a little nicer.

But, Sorry GE, we have to give this Side-by-Side a big THUMBS DOWN.

Pros: We were pleased with the many features of this Frig. For example, there's tons of space inside this unit and the slide-out trays are really nice. The built-in water filter is also a nice feature, providing the possibility of saving money on bottled water. There's a special place in the door for placing bottles of water and cans of pop. The Stainless Steel finish on the front stops my wife from plastering it full of magnets so it maintains a nice appearance from the front. The black metal sides have become the home for all her special notes and things.

Cons: We had two problems with this unit. First, it was about .5 inch taller than what our builder thought would be the tallest Frig that would ever enter the home so I had to trim away some of the finishing work on my overhead cabinets to get it to fit. Unfortunately, the second problem with this unit has led me to tell friends to avoid purchasing this unit. The convenient Ice/Water compartment on the front of the unit was a major factor in our decision to purchase the GE. Since we like to make a lot of smoothies, the CRUSHING feature was important to us. When attempting to crush a glass of ice, we normally get a mixture of half crushed and the other half as full sized cubes. We complained and GE sent out a service guy who told us "they're making these things cheaper and cheaper, there's nothing you can do about it".
