Instead of the occupancy in my home getting smaller as my wife and I get older, our family is getting larger. Much larger. From a quiet three of us in a house that was too large, we became eight a couple of weeks ago when my daughter, husband and their two children moved into our home and our other daughter came home from school for her vacation. She's back so we are only seven again. We have been making a number of changes and some new appliances were included with my wife and I giving them our refrigerator and us buying a new one. We also needed to pad up on our washer and drying machines. Our last dryer that was doing well started having some issues.
That said, we purchased this one made by GE. It's a white coloured gas dryer that was easy to install. In fact it was the Home Depot that did it. A simple gas line from the back of the dryer to our gas line was reattached by the delivery folks. It's a rather easy process when straight replacement. The same goes for venting it. We had another dryer in that same place so we simply used the existing 4" vent system in place.
We payed about $550 that's a bit steep for the machine but got 10% off, free installation via a coupon and we are getting a $75 gift card because we purchased two appliances at the time.
This dryer has a large front door that swings left or right. It is reversible.
The machine had a multitude of settings with 10 cycles. Fortunately we were able to figure out the features and benefits of them and how to use them without any problem. A book does come with the machine and explain in detail what does what. The cycles include one for Cottons, Easycare (perm/press), Delicates and a Timer. There's also a cool down setting that can be manually set and one can also regulate four different temperature setting. That covers more than what we need and look for in dryers.
Having the automatic sensor that monitors the moister in the laundry and shutting down the heat at appropriate time helps the clothes last longer and look better when coming out of the dryer.
The machine is no louder or quieter in operation than any of the previous machines we have had. The dryer does get the clothes dry in good order. Apparently it gives enough selected heat and air circulation to do so.
I like that the lint filter is in the front just inside the door and slides out toward the open room. It's easy for cleaning and should help my daughter to remember to clean it out after each use. That also improved the drying time of clothes because a clean filter allows for better air circulation.
There's a light inside the tub area for finding that last sock. A shut off buzzer that is not loud enough for this guy to hear one flight up can be turned on or off. All the control buttons and dials are on a console art the top rear of the machine. For us that's trouble at times. Because of limited laundry folding space in that room we use the top of the dryer to hold folded clothes and then have to work our way through them to set dials and push buttons.
I thought it interesting that when my wife was reading the trouble shooting area there was nothing noting what to do if the dryer would not turn off. That's what was wrong with our last machine and even though they changed the sensor and the timer, it still would not shut off.
Anyways all in all though it seems like this dryer has all and perhaps more than what we need and I hope it continues to turn off properly, unlike the Maytag we had. I'll update as time goes on.
