Product Review

Arcing, burn marks on cardboard plate

by   hspurgin1 ,   Feb 10, 2009

Pros:  Nice looking, plenty of features, easy to use, roomy.

Cons:  Dangerously unstable with regards to the arcing problem.

Minor gripe: letters/paint rubbed off buttons.

The Bottom Line:  Based on my experience and similar experiences by owners of the same model, I would not recommend purchasing this model.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

We received this GE JES1288SH microwave secondhand from my parents, it's a 2003 model and is a nice looking stainless steel front oven and easy to use (although we have never found a reason to try to grill or brown anything in it). From the day we turned it on, however, it would arc with the most benign objects inside: a ceramic ramikin, butter, a plastic dish. Not always, but enough to make us wary.

Like texasbill, this unit developed a burn mark and a crack in what appears to be a plastic-coated cardboard plate on the right hand side of the oven.

Last week, I put a 10-ounce glass with a little bacon drippings in the bottom, maybe 3/4 inch of fat, to melt. I turned on the oven for 30 seconds and left the room. My husband, who was still in the kitchen, yelled, "What did you put in there?" The microwave, after about 7 seconds, started buzzing and arcing, the glass exploded and the bacon fat -- still solid, globbed everywhere. Clearly, excess heat was not the problem. Needless to say, I unplugged it and bought a replacement microwave the next day, an Emerson, cute, small and hopefully a lot safer than this one.

As it was no longer under warranty, I did not call GE about repair or replacement.
