ScanSnap S510 makes paperless office practical.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap 510 has made the concept of the paperless office a very practical reality for my business with its refreshingly fast multi-page scanning speed, more than adequate image quality, automatic blank page skipping and freedom from paper jams. The time required to scan, annotate and save an image file is not much longer than it would take place the document in a conventional file draw, and once done, document search and retrieval is a breeze. An easily accessed scan option menu enables presetting several custom tailored the image quality and scan speed selections, so the user can quickly select the scan parameters that best match the document being scanned.

Converting to a paperless office makes no sense if you can't speed up document retrieval, and that means key words need to be attached to the document files in the meta data fields for those documents (sketches for example) where the character recognition program can't pick up appropriate key words. The main "save" dialog box only allows the file name and location to be specified. The utility of the scanner would be greatly improved by merely enabling entry of information into the meta data fields at the same time the file is named. As presently configured, you need to open the "properties" box of the document file using Windows Explorer (or similar application) after the file is saved to access the meta data fields .
