Don't buy smooth top for anything other than looks.

We recently replaced our aged, old-fashioned electric ribbon type cooktop with the Frigidaire. It looks great, but it is very hard to clean. Any spill requires scrubbing with special cleanser and/or a razor blade. The elements heat up very quickly but tend to pulsate to keep the temperature constant. Also, your cookware must have very flat bottoms or you'll get hot spots and the cookware will move around. We have a large stock pot that has a bit of a pointy bottom, so if try to stir with one hand, the whole pot will spin around. The pots also tend to slide around the cooktop since it's so smooth. I'm thinking of going back to the old type of ribbon-element cooktops. I wish I had installed a gas line years ago but I didn't want to shell out the $1000. It would've been worth it looking back.
I don't have anything against Frigidaire. It's a great brand. ANY smooth top cooktop/range will have this problem.
