I was in search for an Heating/AC unit that could replace our extremely ineffective Hotel type unit in our sunroom. Let me set this up for you. I live in the middle of Texas where we've been in an official 2 year drought. 100+ days are in the double digits and run May through September. Our sunroom is 460sf and has 16 4sf windows. The present 14k BTU AC wall unit barely holds the heat to 94-95 degrees on hot days. The room was essentially unusable from 10am until 7 in the evening with the very loud unit running full blast.
After a lot of homework, I selected the Friedrich M24YF split AC unit. The 24k BTU was recommended for the size of the room and number of windows. The choice came down to either this unit or the LG equivalent unit. Friedrich won out due to it's Inverter Technology. This drastically reduces the cost of operation due to cycling of the compressor. I also liked that this unit also waves the air left to right as well as up and down. Most do one or the other, not both. The inside unit had one of the smallest wallprints for it BTU, and had a lower unit to ceiling space requirement than the units I researched, important if you have a low ceiling.
For installation, I did a lot of the prework. I chose to pour a small concrete slab for the condenser unit. It's only 90lbs and didn't want to have to worry about a couple of thugs coming in the backyard and walking off with it. I bought and preinstalled 3" slimduct to run the bundle from the inside unit to the outside unit. I hired an actual AC person to do the unit install and took the two people, about 3 hours to complete the job and test it.
I LOVE this unit! It was running when I was standing by the condenser and didn't even know it was on. I had to put my hand in front of unit to feel the hot air it was pulling from the room. Inside, where it really counts, the unit started on full blast, but it was very quiet doing so, as soon as the room dropped to the set temperature, the auto fan dropped down to quiet mode where you heard nothing, just felt the nice cool air in the room, on an 86deg day, in the middle of the day. Something I'm not accustomed to. Since the first day, there has been no regrets. The room is now usable 24x7, summer or winter. Yes winter. Didn't mention, the Friedrich heats as well, but it's so efficient doing this, I didn't mention much about it. We got to test this on some mid 30 deg mornings and was not disappointed. The room was up to the selected setting in just over 5 minutes.
Any complaints? This is a stretch, but there is one. I noticed a slight vinegary aroma in the air the unit was blowing through the room. I contacted Friedrich Helpdesk, but they said it's not a problem they're not familiar with and said, give it more run time since I'd only had it installed for about a week at the time. I still get it, but it's not consistent. I've smelled similar in car ACs at times.
