Product Review

Just Plain FUN

by   blitzcraig ,   May 25, 2004

Pros:  Fun to play, extensive fan community, easy to add custom heroes,

Cons:  Custom voice packs are VERY challenging to install.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

For a game that's nearly two years old and on the surface looks pretty hokey, it's actually quite a bit of fun. So fun, that it hasn't left my CD drive in four months.

What amazes me most about this game is the accuracy with which they captured the Silver Age (late 1950s–early 1970s) comics era. They've got everything from cheesy names (Alche-Miss, Energy X, Man-Bot) to typical comic book stereotypes (thugs, giant ants, melodramatic voice actors). Despite the nostalgia factor, the back story is surprisingly well thought-out and has significant depth.

Above all else, the game is just fun to play. It's a real-time strategy game (not turn-based), and you have to accomplish certain objectives with your heroes while minimizing collateral damage and civilian casualties.

Even if you're not a fan of comic books, I still recommend this game as you're forced to analyze and use your heroes' strengths and weaknesses in order to save Patriot City from the "dastardly villains", instead of just brute-forcing or button-mashing your way through the levels.

"Stand back, villain!"
