Author's Review
My 2004 Taurus SEL was floating around dealer inventories for about a year before I bought it two years ago. It is loaded with every conceivable option including leather, moon roof, adj. pedals, spoiler and the 24-valve engine. I got a great deal on it since it was already a year old, but I still got the full 3-year warranty since it had never been titled.
I have only had two minor problems, one with the moon roof and one electrical and both were promptly fixed under warranty, hassle-free. My small town dealer even gives loaners to service customers!
We take frequent road trips and the Taurus is quiet, stable and comfortable with generous trunk room. Handling is okay, not great. Braking is top notch. The optional 24-valve engine has lots of punch. Gas mileage can range as high as 28 mpg in straight highway driving and I am averaging 22-23 mpg overall with mixed but mostly city driving.
Late-model used Tauruses are fairly cheap, reliable and safe. Tauruses do depreciate rapidly so don't over-pay. Good choice for a teen driver or anyone looking for a solid value in a used car. Look for the 24-valve engine, you'll appreciate the additional horse power.
Not a lot of flash but not a not of cash, either.
