I got my 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD as my high school graduation present. It was gorgeous - purple/gray exterior with gray leather interior. It was also one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. It only left me stranded once (the fuel pump went out at 140k). I drove it until it had 195,000 miles on it, and the check engine light wasn't even on. I wasn't even smart enough then to make sure that it got regular oil changes or maintenance, so it was in perfect running condition and near perfect interior condition with nearly 200k on it with negligent maintenance.
I sold it Feb 2008 for more than I expected on craigslist. I miss it. If you are in the market for a used SUV for any purpose, I highly suggest checking out this model of Ford Explorer. You won't be disappointed.
