Author's Review
I'm guilty...guilty of being among the class of folks who have a love for speed and an appreciation for a breed of car as All-American (and just as sweet) as Apple Pie. A car which made its debut in the 1960's and has galloped through time, leaving clouds of dust in front of the windshields of the many cars that have tried to compete with this workhorse of a vehicle The winds of change blew but this pony endured.
I am referring to the one and only Ford Mustang. I have owned three 5.0L Mustangs in the past (1979,1990,1993) but my white 1993 LX model happened to be my favorite. I speak in the past tense because I unfortunately no longer own this beauty. After having children,my 'joy riding' days became limited as did the room in the backseat. But I was able to enjoy this fox body for a little over 2 years and an enjoyable time that was.
Info on my 1993 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX
My Mustang was purchased used for $9500 and had approximately 70,000 miles on it at that time. It was pure white with maroon interior. This was an automatic with cruise control, air conditioning, powers seats, windows and mirrors and AM/FM/CD (aftermarket). The engine was stock-a 302ci which pumped out a nice 205 horsepower.
Why I loved my 1993 Ford Mustang
I had always been attracted to the strong stance of the Mustang and my past experience with them has been positive. The only time I've ever had to put one of my Mustangs in the shop (aside from maintenance) was when the transmission in my 1990 model needed to be rebuilt. (Might I add though that this vehicle had over 200,000 miles on it so I don't think that's too bad considering it had no other problems.) My 1993 Mustang remained trouble free. The biggest pro of this vehicle, in my opinion, would have to be the smooth acceleration. This vehicle will get-up-and-go when it needs to and it proved this to me both on and off the track. Although my Mustang was never abused,it did venture off onto the drag strip a few times and being the un-modified vehicle that it was, impressed me in its ability to 'chew up and spit out' many of its competitors whose vehicles had $100's of dollars worth of modifications done to them. On this note, this vehicle is easily modified and many times inexpensively. Had my husband and I had more time this would have been a project of ours. While most sports cars can't boast about seat comfort, the 1993 Ford Mustang fairs pretty well. Leg room and accessibility to components in the car is excellent. On the other hand, the backseat is not built for a family. Carseats and children will fit best in the backseat but will be cramped and lack leg room. I'd stick to maybe the family dog to occupy the backseat!
Are there any drawbacks to the 1993 Ford Mustang?
As much as I hate to admit it, yes. Gas mileage is not impressive at all. I've found that unless you fuel up with premium gasoline, the engine will make a delighful 'pinging' noise and with the way gas prices are today you'd be best off getting yourself a second job to keep your pony fed and happy.
My only other complaint- and this is only a complaint if you're competitive like me and find these opportunities hard to resist- is the fact that you'll receive one too many 'invitations' from eager drivers at stop lights to race. You'll know you've received one if you can hear the revving of the engine next to you and see the driver hunch over to give you a sly little smile, all the while slowly creeping up to the 'starting line'. My best advice (if you don't need any more points on your driving record) is...watch him as he takes off from the light like a raging idiot and then politely smile as you pass him on the side of the road trying to earn sympathies from one of our men in blue. It's simple folks, Mustangs are fun to race but there's a time and place for everything.
All in all, I must say that the 1993 Ford Mustang impressed me in more ways than one and I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.
