Author's Review
I purchased this van from a long time owner who had 3 kids. My own car died so he offered this van to me. Needless to say the inside of it was a little thrashed. The top liner was torn and hanging loose so I had to tear it off because eventually it obstructed my rear view. The inside is made of hard lite plastic vynal and I found myself tightening the screws on them bcuz the holes were stripped. The inside plastic doors were off their place as proof of the screws being loose. And yes, after all that, the van 'sounds' rickety from all that loose stuff...but it isn't!
Despite the inside appearance this van is sturdy and has good gas mileage. (And here in California, that counts!!) It is very roomy, enough to where when I moved to another city...it took me a few trips, I just took the seats out! I work with youth and I felt safe enough to take them on our weekly outings in it. I've even used it as a place to nap between classes at school!
When I first aquired this van, I did a little research on my own. I found that the years before and after 1991, there was some sort of a recall on this van. Also, that the first things to go are the air/heating and some of the electrical. (On my van, the hazard and gear panel don't work and the blinkers and wipers go on their own sometimes)
The brakes are good and the engine (on mine) is decent. I did have some sort of starter problem that was also electrical as well. The am/fm radio is just your standard radio and it is decent at first but the speakers gave out and now its just poor quality music/static. You should replace it with a new system anyway. The paint on my van is now a dull gray but I recently waxed it (I know!) and it brought back some of the shine.
I like this van despite the problems I had. I feel safe in it bcuz of the big roomy body. And I don't have to worry about someone wanting to steal it. My mom wants me to get rid of it bcuz it is old (to her) and it (mine) doesn't look very nice. But I won't get rid of it bcuz it helps me get around and with lots of room to spare. Little by little, I'm restoring it to look decent. (Money permitting on a student's life) I think it is worth it.
If you are looking for a roomy van that has good gas mileage and isn't very flashy, this might be for you. (With a little extra investment, you could spruce it up a bit?) One more thing to consider..despite it being an old 1991 van, I still see them driving around! (They're not dead yet!)
