Space Saver high chair is chock full o' features
Date of Review: Jul 16, 2006
The Bottom Line: All the features of a full size high chair and it doesn't take up any extra space in your house. If you can spare a chair, it's a great choice.
I purchased this high chair when my daughter was about 3 months old. My sister had passed along her "Safety First Grow With me" high chair, but since my daughter was not sitting up straight yet, this hard-plastic booster seat did her no good. So as is typical with me... off to Wal Mart I went to find a high chair.
After looking at the Baby Connection high chair at $25.00, I decided that while it was very inexpensive, it was off the list because the seat did not recline. The Evenflo Expressions seemed nice at $60, but since I was already having problems with another Evenflo product, it was off the list. The Graco Harmony highchair was $80 (for a high chair????) so it was a no-go. And then I found the Fisher Price Space Saver on sale for $40. I decided to give it a go.
One of the great features of this item is that you don't need any extra space to store this chair, (thus it's name... Space Saver!). You simply strap this chair into one of your own chairs and use it like you would any other high chair. The chair has two straps to secure it to your chair, one secures under the seat of your chair and the other wraps around the back of the chair. Both straps are easily tightened with a standard clip-buckle system and with both in place, do not allow the high chair to move neither forward or sideways. Your high chair is going to go exactly where your chair goes, and nowhere else! If you have a need for all your chairs, this might not be a good chair for you because it takes one chair out of regular use. However, if you are like me, and have 6 chairs for a 3 person family, this works great!
The Space Saver has three height adjustments and three recline adjustments. Word to the wise, adjust the seat height before strapping it into the chair, once you secure it, you can't adjust the seat height. However, should you not like the height, you merely unbuckle the seat, adjust the height, and rebuckle. Not a big deal, in my opinion. The recline feature in this high chair is amazing, and my daughter sits very comfortably in the very cushy padded seat. Full recline position is perfect for feeding young infants, and as they get older, you simply pull the recline handle on the front of the seat and move the seat to its desired position.
The child tray is easily attached and removed with one hand. The tray also has three positions to grow with your child. You can move the tray towards or away from your child with the handle on the front of the tray. One of the other great features about this high chair is that no matter how far you recline the seat, the tray table stays level. It is mounted on the seat with two armrests that have an adjustment button on the frame. All you have to do is press the button and move the tray to the correct position. The tray has two cupholders, one on either side, and an indented compartment in the middle so plates and bowls aren't so easily knocked off the tray. (Not that anything like that ever happens.) Best of all, the tray is dishwasher safe.
The Space Saver seat itself is a neutral beige color vinyl covering a very soft padded seat. The seat padding is covered in a vinyl/plastic that wipes clean very easily. A five point harness straps your child in securely and is very easily adjusted. The shoulder straps have loops at the bottom and the seatbelt comes through the loops, so the only buckles you have to secure are the two at either side of the seatbelt clip. This is much easier than some five point harnesses with 4 clips. Additionally, when your child is bigger, you don't have to use the shoulder straps, and can just use the seatbelt with a three point harness. The seat also has a large horn at the front center of the seat to help stop babies from sliding out. For some reason, my daughter kicks the living heck out of this thing, I don't know what keeps her from bruising her ankles!
My daughter loves this high chair. She can sit comfortably and securely in the chair while I prepare her meal or need to run to the bathroom and she never fusses or complains. When she gets bigger, the back removes from the seat to form a booster seat. You gotta love multi-use products!!!!
I think the normal price on this chair is $50, which is great considering all its features and functionality. I however, got it for $40 on sale. I cannot think of any reason not to purchase this high chair and I highly recommend it.
