Nice, compact high chair
Date of Review: Nov 6, 2008
The Bottom Line: This is a good high chair for the money. Pros outweigh cons.
I live in military housing and our kitchen/dining room area simply has no room for a high chair unless you want to squeeze around it to maneuver around. This was the sole reason I bought the Fisher-Price Space Saver High Chair. I didn't even consider any other high chair - I simply needed one that attached to one of our existing chairs. We also have a bar-height kitchen table, so the baby being able to sit up high enough at the dinner table with us was important.
High Chair Stats:
Dimensions - 16.5"H x 18.5"W x 18"D
Weight limit - 50 lb
5 point harness
3-position recline
Converts to booster seat to grow with baby
Dishwasher-safe tray with 2 cupholders
One-hand tray removal
Easy-to-clean surface pad
What I like about the high chair:
The biggest plus to this chair is the amount of space it saves. I love that it attaches to an already-existing kitchen chair and takes up no extra space whatsoever.
Preparing the high chair for my daughter's first use was simple. My husband popped it out of the box, popped a few pieces together and buckled it under and behind our kitchen chair and it was ready for use.
The chair has a 5-point harness that was perfect for our daughter who could not yet sit up completely unsupported yet when we first got the high chair. I noticed the difference when she sat in a high chair that my mother has for her and it only had a 3-point lap harness - she kept leaning forward over the tray because her back wasn't yet strong enough for her to sit upright. I wouldn't put a baby in the Fisher Price Space Saver High Chair that has less than perfect head support, but it is just fine for a baby in the supported sitter stage, plus it reclines if your baby gets tired of sitting upright, though I wouldn't recommend letting a baby sleep in this high chair as it doesn't look very comfortable for sleeping. To recline the chair, you simply pull the recline lever at the bottom of the chair and tilt it back until it clicks into place.
The high chair pad and tray are very easy to keep clean and the tray is dishwasher safe. I have not yet used it in the dishwasher as my baby is 6 months old with very easy to contain messes, but I am looking forward to the easy cleaning the dishwasher will offer later on down the road.
The seat seems to be comfortable. My daughter is quick to let me know when she is not comfortable and she seems happy as a clam while in her high chair.
I am pleased that the chair converts to a booster and look forward to using it as one.
Things I do not like about the high chair:
My main complaint about this high chair is the one-hand tray detachment/attachment doesn't work very well. The "arms" that it attaches to never seem to be exactly straight and as a result, I can never attach/detach with one hand with my baby in my other arm. I always have to remove her from the high chair, put her in one of her activity centers and then go back to put the tray back on the high chair with 2 hands - it works fine with 2 hands because you can jiggle it on. It seems cheaply made in this respect and the one-handed attach/detach was one of the things I was looking forward to with this chair. Plus, I am afraid that my daughter, when she gets older, will see me using 2 hands to put the tray on and figure out herself how it works to remove it, as the levers for 2-hand release are well within her reach, whereas the 1-hand release would not be within her reach.
I also find the harness straps a little tough to clean. They are textured and food gets caught between the textures very easily, but does not come out so easily. It only requires a little bit of extra time for cleaning, but when your child is whining about something, that little bit of extra time can seem like an eternity.
Final thoughts:
If you lack space or have a taller kitchen table, this is the high chair for you. If the one-hand release is of the utmost importance to you, you might want to look for another chair. Otherwise, the chair is easy to assemble and fun for my daughter to eat on.
