I consider Neosporin to be an essential item to all good first aid kits no matter how small. My mother always told me to carry a small first aid kit in my purse at all times. Then of course to be really prepared you should have a larger kit for the house and one for your automobile as well. That way you are always prepared for any proverbial accident that we might encounter no matter where we are.
Now days I am a Boy Scout Leader and I teach all the boys in our troop to make up an individual first aid kit that they can carry in their pocket so they will always be prepared. I know we always have someone who gets a scrape or cut of some sort when we have an outing. It’s one of those things where no matter how much you try to avoid it something always comes up.
Of course, I have studied herbal medicine in case I was to get stuck out in the woods on a long hike and I would happen to loose my pack and first aid kit. However as Americans, we have become very dependent on being lazy and what ever is convenient. Most kids would laugh if you tried to use herbs on a cut unless it was a dire situation, upon which we hope we never encounter.
That is why having a well stocked first aid kit is one of the most important items for me when we go anywhere. I have not always been so prepared though. Like in 2003 when my daughter got bit by a dog. I had to go to Wal-mart to buy supplies to deal with her injury.
It was after she got bit that I first realized the importance of Neosporin and keeping a supply of first aid items on hand at home was so important like my mother told me. As they say we have to learn the hard way though, well that was always me.
I bought a one ounce tube of Neosporin the day she got bit, because it said it would decrease the risk of infection. Then I bought a pack of gauze pads, butterfly band aids, first aid tape and some prep pads to clean it with. For a week I changed her band aids three or more times a day and applied Neosporin, generously to the injured area. It healed very well with just a small scar. It never got infected because I used the Neosporin on it each time I changed the bandages.
Most people run their kids to the doctor for the simplest things. I don’t believe in taking my kids to a doctor unless it is something I cannot treat myself. Usually you can take care of most minor injuries with a few simple supplies and it might cost ten dollars compared to the hundred dollars for the doctor visit to do the same exact thing you can do yourself at home.
Neosporin is an antiboitic ointment sold at Wal-mart and most drug stores. The most common size container is a one ounce tube for 7.99. The type I bought was a cream and was not greasy feeling. You need to make sure to read the warning labels and only use it externally as the directions tell you to get the maximum benefit from it. You can order it online in small packs for personal first aid kits that can fit in your pocket or purse. They usually contain enough for one application only. Neosporin is sold as an over the counter drug. Some people are allergic, so if your not sure you try a small bit at first to see if you have a reaction to it before applying very much, and consult a doctor if you have a reaction to it.
