Neosporin Antibiotic Ointment
Neosporin is one of the name brand antibiotic ointments for topical use. Neosporin is a trademarked product of Johnson & Johnson that is duplicated by generic Triple Antibiotic Ointment. I have used Neosporin a number of times to good effect on wounds and abrasions. Neosporin makes a good addition to your first aid kit or medicine cabinet.
Typically, when you have an open wound where the skin is broken and it bleeds, you should first clean the wound. In addition to cleaning the wound, it should also be bandaged after applying an antiseptic and antibiotic ointment like Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment. You can also use Bacitracin which is also an effective topical ointment.
Neosporin consists of three separate antibiotics that work to eliminate many more potential bacteria than a single antibiotic does, sometimes. Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment contains not only Bacitracin, but also Neomycin and Polymyxin in a light cream. A single dab of Neomycin contains Bacitracin 400 Units; Neomycin 3.5 mg; Polymyxin B 5000 Units in a base of cocoa butter and other inert ingredients.
Just wash the wound with water and maybe some mild soap but get the dirt you can see out of it and run plenty of clean water on it. Then let the wound dry and put some iodine or mercurochrome on it to kill the surface bacteria. Finally, put a dab of Neosporin on the wound and bandage it with gauze and tape, or if it is a small wound, a band aid strip will be fine.
One important thing to realize is that neither Neosporin nor Bacitracin ointment are prescription drugs but are available over the counter so anybody who wants to pay the modest price can use what used to be considered a "miracle drug". I believe this is the salve I used to get it from my family doctor under prescription years ago.
Neosporin Ointment provides first aid treatment to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns on external skin only. Sometimes a person is allergic to one of the components of Neosporin so they should discontinue use of triple antibiotic ointment and try Bacitracin, which may work for those individuals. Always be aware you can check with your doctor if you have allergic reactions or break out in a rash for there are other choices for those folks.
The ointment does wonders in providing fast relief in avoiding infection or cleans up any infection that has already occurred and allows the wound to heal quickly and cleanly. One dab of Neosporin provides a lot of healing power through the combination of the active ingredients.
Keep out of the mouth and eyes. For external use only. Keep out of the reach of children.
