by   three_ster , top reviewer in Online Stores & Services, Movies, Pets at Epinions.com ,   Aug 5, 2008

Pros:  very inventive story, great cast, impressive special effects, lots of fun

Cons:  it got cancelled

The Bottom Line:  Well worth the price of admission, this is a great DVD series to own, that really shows what science fiction originality should look like.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Back in 2002, FOX tried to bring an original show to the air in the form of Firefly. Based some five-hundred years in the future, it focused on a ship of outcasts who flew about the galaxy trying to avoid both sides of the law. They fly aboard a transport ship called "Serenity", and seek to make money by transporting things across the galaxy. Piloted by Captain Malcolm Reynolds, the show depicts the deep stories and exciting adventures that the ship and its crew encounter. It was a premise that didn't catch on enough in its first run, and FOX ended up giving up on the show fare before its time. The only thing that saved it from going into oblivion was the fans, who came out in droves supporting the show and its cast. Though it didn't help the future of the show, the cult following got enough support behind them that a film was made to appease their hunger. A few years later, Serenity would hit the big screen.

Reynolds wasn't the only notable character on the ship, but he was one that was given a great back-story as a Sergeant who fought during the recent wars, but ended up on the wrong side when it was over. His crews on Serenity was first mate Zoe (who was also a veteran), Zoe's husband Hoban Washbourne (Wash) who was the pilot, the mechanic Kaylee, a preacher named Shepard Book, a doctor named Simon, a psychic named River, the resident tough guy Jayne, and the eye candy of Inara. Together, they form a pretty interesting crew that is going to have to keep performing transport jobs to make ends meet, and even while they come across enemies in their daily business, they are still on the run from the group that won the war; The Alliance. The problem is that the ship, much like you would expect, is always finding trouble, and in that regard both action and intrigue are always just a step behind the crew.

Firefly was brought to the small screen by creator Joss Whedon, whose past accomplishments had included Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. To say the least, he knew how to put a good show together, and with the help of some talented writers, the idea seemed like one that could sustain a show for many years to come. The problem was that not enough fans tuned in immediately, and the audience ended up slipping a little through the first few episodes. Things didn't improve, and FOX pulled the plug after only 11 episodes of Firefly had even aired. It was an abrupt end to the show, and caught a lot of die-hard fans by surprise, after having fallen in love with both the show and its premise. Too late, FOX came to realize that there was indeed a strong-following for the show, and that was why the film and DVD sets for the show itself were released.

The DVD set for Firefly contains all 14 episodes of the show, including those that were not originally shown on the air. It serves as a great series to own if you were either a fan of the series or love to watch science fiction. The show was like nothing else on television at the time, and could have still been going strong if FOX hadn't pulled the plug on them so early. Now all that's left is the film, and this DVD set that contains all the episodes as well as several bonus features to go along with it. Many argue that this is one of the best series to ever be cancelled in its first season, and while that isn't exactly saying a lot in comparison to other shows, I think it rings true as much as anything else that can be said about the show. Firefly was that unique blend of science fiction, action, and a great ensemble cast that simply made watching each episode extremely fun. Give yourself a treat if you love science fiction, because this set is sure to entertain.
