Product Review

Classic Final Fantasy gone portable!

by   fredrick2003 ,   Feb 10, 2006

Pros:  Complete games of Final Fantasy 1 and 2, with bonus dungeons and enhanced graphics.

Cons:  The games havn't aged well, and the experience just seems dry at times.

The Bottom Line:  Recommended to ALL turn-based RPG fans and all Final Fantasy fans, other people may want to skip this one.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I love Final Fantasy games, I just have other games I love just as much so I havn't gotten around to playing the full series yet. I did own Final Fantasy 1 on my beloved NES, so I remember that game well. So, heres the review on a delightful repackaging of a classic that you can play on the go!

ALSO: The Final Fantasy II in this game is not the Final Fantasy II on the SNES that was released in america, that game was actually Final Fantasy IV.

Graphics:
The graphics have been updated since the old days, and they did a remarkable job, the backgrounds in the fights look fantastic and the enemies and characters have much more detail than usual.

Story:
I'll be honest, these games dont have much in terms of story, not even for the standards at the time the games we're released in. In Final Fantasy I, you are a group of warriors who need to save the world, in Final Fantasy II you are a group of young people who want to get back at the emporer for murdering their parents.

Sound:
The sound is excellent, the battle music in Final Fantasy I is just as catchy as ever, and after extended playing you will find yourself humming it, again. All of the attacks make sounds that correspond to the attack or weapon you are using and it feels like each weapon connects with the enemy with a satisfying "slash-slash" or "whooosh".

Gameplay:
The games play in standard RPG style, with turn-based combat with the usual commands (fight, magic, item, etc.) and as you fight more monsters you level up and get experience. In Final Fantasy I you gain "levels" with your whole character and your stats increase. And in Final Fantasy II you only level up what you use, this makes you want to use all of your spells and weapons evenly, so you are always ready for what comes next.

I strongly recommend this game to all ALL rpg players, especially those who played and loved Final Fantasy I on the NES, its about time for a return trip to that magical land if I do say so myself...
