Author's Review
I recently got my husband a subscription to Field & Stream and he and I both love it! Now as most of you know by reading some of my other reviews, I love to fish, so actually this magazine suits me just fine. I have learned so much more about fishing and have found some really neat spots to fish all over the US by having this magazine.
I learned that people catch fish and I dont! I learned that some of the same lures that I have and I cant use correctly apparently, that men and women all over the US are using successfully. I cant figure that part out and it is very frustrating.
I learned that I am going to stick with live bait and leave most of the lures alone, because they hurt! And I learned that I am very jealous of all the nice pictures I see of other people catching the big ones when I can only catch the small ones. But I finally did catch that bass, about a 2 pounder, but hey, its a start!
The Magazine
Field & Stream is a wonderful magazine for the outdoorsman/woman and for the son or daughter who likes to fish and hunt with the parent/parents. There are always fishing, hunting, camping tips and places through out the magazine.
There are always several articles that will surely peak your interest! For instance did you know that there is a safe way to drink water? Did you know that underneath the top layer of water, you would find stuff called Protozoan Cysts that are spread by animals and man/woman and are harmful if swallowed. Now I dont know about you but I have never really thought about it because generally when I go out fishing I take lots of water or sodas.
But because I read an article in Field & Stream I learned a lot about water in creeks, ponds, streams, etc. I found out that of course boiling the water is the best thing you can do and you dont have to boil it for 15 or longer, just to a boil will do. There are also filters that you can buy and take with you on your trip to the wilderness or the creek that will filter water catching everything but viruses. But, then you need to still boil. This article fascinated me. These filters appear to be light weight and are a hand pump type with a hose that goes into the water.
The magazine always has the content features in the front that will let you know what the highlights of the month are. And of course the advertisements run rapid throughout the magazine. I dont care for some of them though because they promote smoking and drinking, but considering the type of magazine I suppose its okay. I just have to explain to my son who will look at it that those things are not right. And I have to do that anyway so it doesnt really matter.
There are questions and answers about hunting and fishing. There is a Gamewatch section, a rifle section, tackle and tactics, shotguns, gearing up, destinations, conservation, vehicles, sportsmans notebook, health and safety, perspectives, young writers contest and all of these have articles each month with new information.
Now mind you I dont read the hunting articles, because I could care less about those, but the fishing articles and I get along really well. I didnt realize that there were so many different kinds of fish! And big ones too! And the scenery in this magazine is beautiful and makes you wish you were there.
Other Information
You will also find information on safety issues for guns such as Remington® Bolt Action Centerfire Firearms Manufactured Before 1982. And sometimes other important information like recalls on these types and others.
You can subscribe to Field & Stream each year and sometimes it is offered for a 2 year or 3 year subscription, which is a greater savings. The yearly price can run around 12.00, depending on how you subscribe.
You can go to their website at: www.fieldandandstream.com and make changes on your address, ordering, you can order back issues if you like, which are 5.00 per issue, which is a little pricey I think.
You can call the customer service line at: 1-800-289-0639 for all questions and you can write to:
P.O. Box 60001
Tampa, FL. 33660-0001
You can even join the Field & Stream Club at 1-888-306-8836
And you can find various other names, and addresses in the back of the magazine.
The magazine has about 120 pages or so. Not a big one that takes for ever to get through and one that you will get bored with before you get half way through it.
What I Really Liked The Most
I really enjoyed this magazine from beginning to end, (except for the hunting stuff) but I really like the Cheers and Jeers section. By reading the Cheers and Jeers I can find out how other people feel about articles that have been printed
I also found articles on fishing that educated me be more. I found information about the different rods and reels there are and the different lures. And like I said, the pictures that come along with the articles will just take your breath away.
The cost for me was also a plus, because I got it for free. I did something online, but I cant remember what it was for the life of me, but, because I earned enough points, I got a free year subscription to Field & Stream. I could have chose some other magazines, but I figured we would get more out this one than those choices.
We have really enjoyed this magazine a lot! And even in a doctors office you will find them, so pick one up, look through it, and if you like it, order you a subscription. I have been known to take a copy of this magazine with me when it was my turn to go back to see my doctor, and he always laughs at me. I think it amuses him that I love to fish.
I really like this magazine!
I hope that this has helped in some kind of way.
God Bless!
