Author's Review
I bought a paper shredder mainly because I often wish I didn't have to rip up paper with my hands just to feel secure that I have discarded my personal information properly. I used to tear up receipts and other documents with my social security number on them as many times as my fingers could give. I would end up with tiny little pieces of paper that I would have to carefully carry to the garbage can to make sure I didn't leave a mess. I was good, but I no longer have to mutilate my hands. Now I can shred all those papers that once caused all the blood vessels in my fingers to surface.
I bought the Shred Mate because it was small. I knew I would not struggle to find space for it near my desk. I also liked the idea that it was a cross-cut shredder. That simply means that it shreds in two directions, leaving the paper in small pieces. This is also for better security if you are shredding documents with very personal information. The strip-cut only shreds the paper in one direction (long pieces of paper that one could easily put back together again like a puzzle if they were so determined).
This device is easy to use and very convenient since it is so small, but because of it's size, it fills up very quickly. If you don't empty it often, it can get clogged. Hey, at least it does come with its own bin! I like that because it doesn't have to take up my trash can that I use for other things.
The top piece is kind of heavy. Don't get me wrong now, I can lift it with ease! But when trying to empty the bin of the shreds, you have to lift off the top (the actual shredder) and then empty the bin. When you lift it, you are supposed to be careful not to touch the other side, where the blades are. I unplug it, just to be on the safe side! I wouldn't want to make headlines that my fingers were shredded in this thing because I accidentally touched the button that makes it go without sensing the paper in the slot.
All in all, I have to say I like this little device. It serves my purpose and more. I have been using it for a few months now and it is in perfect working condition. I probably fill up the bin once a week on average.
And for fun... you can shred up different colored papers for confetti for parties or gift packages! Why not, right?
