Author's Review
We purchased this shredder after our 1 1/2 year old Xerox turd stopped working. The Fellowes shredder has a nice large capacity bin, about the size of a 13 gallon kitchen trash bin. It comes in a nice black and silver color scheme that fits into most decor's. I needed a reliable shredder that would actually handle multiple pages as advertised instead of growling and binding at loads more than two pages. The CD/DVD and Credit Card shred capability feature is a definite bonus, as many times we need to destroy this type of media to protect our identity, and scissors do not do CD/DVD's well at all.
I purchased this unit at a wholesale club for an excellent price, and did so because it had several features I was looking for, namely a confetti cut, heavy duty cutting capacity, and larger than average bin. It looks and feels sturdy and well built. Set up was a breeze, just unpack the bin and motor head assembly, place the motor head assembly on the bin, plug it into a wall outlet, and start shredding. The unit features Automatic-On, On-Forward, On-Reverse selection via a switch on the top front of the unit. A power indicator is also included so you know the unit is plugged in and ready to operate. The unit comes with a 6' cord, which is convenient when placing the unit in your home office as it gives you some latitude. When the bin is full, emptying it is a breeze. Simply pull the front handle on the bin and it slides out. No need to lift the motor head off and set it aside while getting paper shavings all over your floor. This unit is a confetti shred style, which is recommended for maximum security.
Shredding is a breeze with this unit. It is advertised as a 10 page unit. I've shred up to the advertised 10 sheets with little binding and little motor effort. Typically, if a unit is rated at 10 sheets, 8, or 10% of advertised volume, is a sensible maximum, so this unit is definitely on par with the industry standard. It eats credit cards like soft cardboard, no effort at all. CD's it handles with ease as well. It does make a little more noise with the CD/DVD's as they are a harder material. Make sure you have the CD/DVD feeder cover DOWN when doing CD/DVD's as if you do not, some of the chips do want to fly out and go on the floor. Noise level is above average being on the quieter side than most shredders, and quite tolerable. Noise level is much better than the coffee grinder Xerox I suffered with for a year and a half.
So far I am very very pleased with this shredder. It has style, good performance, and better than average quality. Many Fellowes models are highly rated and recommended, and I believe this one should be considered as part of that overall higher rated group. I will publish an update if I encounter any difficulties in the future.
