Beware!
Date of Review: Feb 9, 2005
The Bottom Line: STAY AWAY! Proprietary hardware locks you with their service and rules. Does not even work well. Many other alternatives available for much better quality phone service.
Be very careful with Packet8, read Terms and Conditions very carefully. I did not try their video-phone service, just regular residential voice service, back in November 2004. Voice connection within the US was acceptable however noticeably worse from 'regular' phone service. Overseas calls with very high latency, almost like 1sec. long (yes, I do have fast cable Internet connection). Packet8 device did not support FAX machines at that time, which they did not say in the first place (now they claim on their web-site it does work...). Being unsatisfied I returned the device to the point of sale, but that fact did not get somehow to Packet8 computers. Three months later they charged my credit card account monthly usage fee, saying I still have the service and my free trial period is over. Wishing to quit I got charged another $59 disconnection fee. It did not help to explain that I do not even own their device for more than three months now. Packet8 turned out to be me THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND USELESS PHONE SERVICE I ever had. I ended up paying over $80 for the total of less than one hour of usage within my first week of 'risk free trial'.
