Author's Review
Bought this on-line for $100 after my local vac store recommended this model as a back-up cheap vac (they were selling it for $149). I have mostly maple and white tile floors in a house on a red dirt road, several hairy dogs, sheep, poultry, garden - you can imagine the dirt & worse we have tracked in every day - every speck and dog hair is visible. My main vacuum is a Kirby Generation III - fantastic on carpet, but about as nimble in the house as a Sherman tank. I need to do a quickie vacuum of the downstairs every day or two, and it is an ordeal to haul the heavy Kirby out, change over to the hose attachment, and then lug the beast all over. The Sanitaire has changed all that. With the back strap, I can easily tote it room to room and can get the job done in less than half the time the Kirby took. The Kirby tools are compatible with the Sanitaire, which is a real bonus for me - I do not care for the telescopic wand that comes with the Sanitaire (heavy), so I couple the lightweight plastic Kirby wand and the lightweight Kirby brush for my floors. I also do not care for the Sanitaire's floor tool - it is heavy metal/plastic and does not work any better than the simple brush attachment form my Kirby (the drape brush attachment, I think). It seems odd that Sanitaire coupled their lightweight hose with such a heavy wand and floor tool - in fact, the hose will collapse easily if kinked.
All in all, I love the ease of tossing this vacuum on my back and whizzing through a dreaded chore. It has adequate suction for dirt, sand, seeds, and the small gravel that ends up on my floors. It is not adequate for carpet, though I do use it on my nice oriental rugs in between Kirby vacuumings to save them from the abuse of a beater bar vacuum and it does an okay job there. I am not personally enamored with all the Sanitaire's attachments, but because I can mix and match attachments with my other vacuum, I have a lightweight vacuum that works great for my needs. I have only had it about 2 months, so I can't vouch for longevity. For the price, the convenience seems well worth it.
