Care to be a Modern Explorer?
Date of Review: Nov 7, 2004
The Bottom Line: Exploring in the wilderness? Road trips? River trips? This is a must to enhance your outdoor enjoyment! Definitely a conversational piece as well!
After few months of using this trip-enhancing gadget, I have histories of my wilderness outings. I essentially have been charting my explores in my computer and not only do I have photos of these memorable trips, I also have trackings of where I have been. Definitely make my trip presentation in photo album and my web site more interesting and more informative.
This all-in-one-navigation device is definitely a must for all outdoor explorers. It combines GPS, altimeter, and electronic compass. It gives bearing information (of where you are standing) and it also determines precise altitude (how high and fast you are climbing and vice versa). It also allows you to keep track of your trail. You can name and edit your marks on your trail. For example, you can name your starting place as "Home" and if you come across a cliff, you can mark "Cliff" on your device. There are even little map legend symbols that represent the type of place you are marking. Gas station symbol. Picnic symbol. The following site shows you all the available map symbols: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/mapLegend.html.
So if you like to return the same way, you could follow the trail you have set prior. This is especially helpful when you are lost. You could use this device to back track your path. LOL. You could use this device in a very large mall and if somehow you are lost, you could use the device to help you to return to your entry point. Besides, you might avoid going to the same store twice! This assumes the satellite signals could get through to allow you to mark the path!!!
This amazing device also allows you to zoom in viewing your overall path. You also could use in the rain, snow, and yes, under the sun as well!
What I like about this device is that you could use just one hand to maneuver the menu options on the device.
You could use this must device when you hike, when you ride your mountain bike, and when you drive or ride in a vehicle. This device measures the speed as well.
There's enough storage space in the device to keep track of your many exploration paths.
One more thing: You don't need to pay for the GPS information --- at least not until 2006 according to the manufacturer's web site, www.garmin.com.
This device also allows a change of time zone and yes, you can use the same device anywhere in the world. Completely free of charge.
One last thing, you are also able to pick up additional accessories. E.G. PC Interface Cable, Map Source CD, etc. Believe me, especially these two accessories will help to make your explorations more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Now, the bad thing is that the batteries do not last as long as indicated in the owner's manual. You will need to bring an extra set of double A batteries with you even if you are taking a day trip. Anything longer will require additional sets. Plan for two sets per day. I found using rechargeable batteries will help to save some costs. You can always recharge them at a gas station or at a hotel lobby or at a restaurant --- sometimes even at a local washrooms!!! For the latter, just be prepared to bring some air freshener if the washroom allows more than one person --- and hopefully, there's no line up.
Enjoy!
