Grundig G6 Aviator (Buzz Aldrin)
Pros:
Compact takealong Good sensitivity and selectivity REALLY nice-sounding audio Rubberized case is nice
Cons:
Basic SSB functionality, only. No synchronous detection. No exhaulted carrier.
The Bottom Line:
I was tempted to wait for the G3 to come out; but, on hearing the outstanding (for its size) audio, I decided to try the G6. It's a winner!

The Grundig G6 is an amazing little package. When you look at the small size of this receiver, it's stunning how much performance the Eton engineers have managed to pack into it. Sensitivity, selectivity, band coverage, audio quality are all great!
In each category, you can find a better-performing radio, sure. But in this compact size, at this price?
SSB Performance. Even though the radio can receive SSB and CW, (apparently using a BFO rather than a product detector, you get distortion on stronger signals (shortening the antenna is sometimes necessary to reduce this effect). The SSB reception feature does not have selectable upper- lower-sideband. Nor does it support exhalted carrier reception for world band or am broadcast band listening.
That said, the SSB/CW capability is quite useable. For instance, I've listened with great enjoyment to amateur radio operators here and in Europe many times on the 7 and 14 MHz band.
Tuning across the shortwave bands is a pleasure. Try Voice of Greece in the evenings on 7475 or 9420. Great music! The G6 has two audio settings and the Mega Bass makes for very pleasant, non-fatiguing listening.
FM stereo with headphones is a blast with the G6!
If you like talk radio, the G6 does a fine job on the AM broadcast band. I don't listen to long wave, but I did hear a VOR station's CW ID the one time I tuned around.
Don't expect to hear distant airports on the air band. I spent an enjoyable half hour the other day listening to the operations of a nearby regional airport.
I've only set memories for my favorite FM stations; but it's pretty simple to use. I don't plan to use any of the alarm functions.
