Epinions The Escort Passport 8500 Radar Detector - Best Protection or Just Hype?

by  jag2112,  Apr 25, 2002
Pros: Superior detection capabilities. Loaded with customizable features. Nice design.
Cons: Expensive.
The Bottom Line: The hype about the Passport 8500 is justified. It will protect you in almost any condition. And it'll grow with you in the future...
Review: In the ever competitive cat and mouse chase world of police radar and drivers who want 'protection' from their lead-foot driving tendencies, radar detection companies are always trying to keep in step with the radar gun producing folks who are doing...

Epinions PASSPORT 8500: Now, You Too Can Drive Like a Bat Outta Hell With Confidence!

by  vara,  Sep 17, 2003
Pros: Does its job and does it well. ExpertMeter. High quality item, too.
Cons: Lacking voice feature, maybe? Of course, a bit pricey.
The Bottom Line: An all-around performer that's a little pricey but a worthy investment. I'd choose this detector all over again over the V1 and cheaper models.
Review: There I was! White-knuckled and sweating, pedal to the metal... flying down the interstate at 100 mph. I suppose there were a lot of things on my mind as I flew towards Dallas, TX in a borrowed 1997 Jaguar XK8 (review to come, I promise), but being ...

Epinions Not quite a Vette....but then some (5-26-01)

by  A-RDR-GUY, top reviewer in Electronics ,  Apr 19, 2001
Pros: Clean/Clear display; Band selectable; Customized for driver
Cons: EZ Program! NOT!; Long unit; Windshield mount
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a Valentine but can't afford one but want a little more than a Beltronics 980/970, then this is your DETECTOR.
Review: The Escort name has been around for over 20 years. They have dominated the detector market with the Original Escort, Escort Passport, and late 80s Solo. After one of the founders had departed from the company (Mike Valentine) the company hasn't produced...

by  joe_gadget,  Oct 27, 2002
Pros: Programmable, High Performance Detection, Easy to Mute
Cons: Expensive
The Bottom Line: If you need or want the best there is, look no further. It is well worth the investment. I highly recommend the Passport 8500.
Review: Background
My commute to and from work puts me in my car about 2 hours a day. I have owned escort and passport radar detectors for about 15 years and have never been disappointed.

Epinions Escort Passport 8500: The Art Of Evading Cops

by  soupcraze,  Feb 8, 2003
Pros: Good Sensitivity, Good Price, Upgradable, Covers All Bands
Cons: Lacks Features of V1, Silver Color Is More Appealing To Theives
The Bottom Line: The Escort Passport 8500 is a great radar detector, one of the two best, great for the price, but the V1 is better otherwise.
Review: For the many people who require the best protection from cops and who can't afford the Valentine One comes the Escort Passport 8500! The Passport 8500 is $100 less than the Valentine, and it is put up as a very competent competitor. I was able to use a...

Epinions Valentine1 vs. Passport x50 road test

by  fomine,  Dec 8, 2004
Pros: Detection range, very little falsing, FREQUENCY DETECTION, travel case
Cons: Silver paint, no autobrightness, V1 windshield mount is much smarter
The Bottom Line: Excellent unit for an excellent price! I will recommend it for radar detection under any conditions.
Review: For those who have read already this review please go right to the bottom and see an update as of 03/15/05. Two months ago I started shopping for a new radar detector. I was tired of a cheap stuff and wanted to buy the very best on the market. After ...

Epinions 8500 x50 vs. rx65 vs. V1

by  pepper45322,  May 25, 2004
Pros: soothing HP blue display, automute is a must, raspy brap alerts not annoying, smartcord
Cons: no SWS on x50, length, no voice, no directional arrows
The Bottom Line: For $275, the soothing blue display, outstanding Ka and K band sensitivity, quiet filters and user friendliness the x50 is a value not topped by any other detector
Review: After hours of reviewing articles, radar tests at speedzones.com, radartest.com, http://www.radar-detectors.com , motortrend.com and others, I narrowed it down to x50, rx65, and V1. Not an easy choice for me. THE SKINNY ON THE THREE DETECTORS escort ...

by  fhiga,  Jul 17, 2003
Pros: Highly programmable, Band Selectivity, Ka band sensitivity, solidly built
Cons: Rear radar sensitivity, lots of K band falsing, somewhat bulky
The Bottom Line: VERY well worth its $300. Excellent programmable features, radar sensitivity, Ka band detection performance at its greatest!

Epinions I'm a believer!

by  goaub,  Jan 4, 2002
Pros: Multi-functional display, AUTO mode, silver color, trade-in allowance
Cons: Not that small, For $300 hardwire kit should also be standard
The Bottom Line: Definitely one of the best detectors on the market. If the V1 is a little too pricey, then the 8500 gives you just about the same features, saving $130.
Review: I had been contemplating getting a new detector for a while and had been eyeing the 8500 and the V1, but quite honestly, my old Passport 4500 had been performing faithfully and I couldn't justify the cost. Well my wife took care of that, it was a...

Epinions New 8500 x50 Model for the Modern Road Rebel

by  threedman,  Apr 23, 2004
Pros: Increased Ka sensitivity, ZR3 laser shifter compatibility, Expert mode.
Cons: No way of knowing if Radar is coming from Front or Rear.
The Bottom Line: Paired with the ZR3 laser shifter system and expert mode, this is the only real option on the market.
Review: The Escort Passport X50 radar detector has been released. http://www.escortradar.com/x50 .htm According to the hype on the webpage, there are only a few improvements over the old basic 8500 model. Most importantly, it has a little better range over ...
