Author's Review
I purchased the Ergo Baby Carrier when my son was about 5 months old. Year to date, I still consider it one of the best baby item that I purchased! I absolutely love it!
I had been using a Snugli Carrier up until the point that I purchased my Ergo. The Snugli worked fine for the first couple of months, but after that my son grew too heavy. My shoulder and back began to hurt the moment I put it on. I still wanted a carrier though. Sometimes, wearing my baby was the only way I could get dinner made or get through the store without him screaming. So
After much research I decided to purchase the Ergo Baby Carrier. Like I already said, I love it!
As the name insinuates
The Ergo Baby Carrier is ergonomically correct. The bulk of the weight is supported on your hips through the wide, padded strap that hooks around your waist. The weight is balanced with wide, padded shoulder straps. It is very comfortable to wear. I have worn it with my 16-pound son for hours without any strain. It can also very easily and quickly be adjusted to fit any body type and/or size. My husband and I both wear it, and it takes no time at all to adjust the straps to compensate for our different sizes.
One of the things I considered when researching carriers is growth. I knew my son was only going to get bigger and heavier. I did not want to be back at ground zero in just a couple more months. Also, we plan on having more children and I wanted a carrier that could be used, once again, for a newborn.
The Ergo Baby Carrier is perfect for all babies. You can carry newborns all the way up to a 40-pound child! When using the carrier with a newborn you do have to use an infant insert. This insert supports the baby in a cradled position against your front. While I have not used the insert yet, my sister-in-law has and said it works wonderful. The carrier always positions your baby against your body, with no straps or fabric in between, making it very cozy, comfortable and secure feeling for both your baby and you.
Another thing that influenced my decision to get the Ergo Carrier is its versatility. I couldnt decide whether to go with another front carrier or a backpack carrier. With the Ergo, I did not have to decide. You can wear it on the front, hip and/or back! I love being able to put my son on my back when cooking dinner or hiking. What I love even more is it is not big and bulky like more backpack carriers. It fits just like a backpack with the baby/child snuggly riding as if riding piggyback. I also love being able to carry him in the front. It is a nice cozy, snug way to wear your baby and we both really enjoy it. I have not used the hip position too often, but it is comfortable as well. My son is comfortable and very happy in any of the positions.
The Ergo Baby Carrier is easy to use. With the Snugli I always struggled to get my son in and out. With the Ergo it is simple! When using the front and hip carry positions you simply strap the carrier around your waist, hold your baby against your body in the position he/she will be riding and then pull the carrier up around the baby. You then place your arms, one at a time, through shoulder straps and then snap in back to hold in place. It really is very, very simple. The back carry position is a little trickier, but with practice still very doable. Again you strap waistband around waist. You then pull one shoulder strap on, leaving the other hanging down. Now comes the tricky part
Placing your baby on your hip, you then lean forward and transfer him/her to piggyback position. Once there you pull other shoulder strap on and snap into place. You can then gently bounce to get your baby adjusted and centered into a comfortable position. I know this probably sound complicated, but it only took me a couple of times and I could do it easily and quickly all by my self.
Some other positive features of the Ergo include a zipper pocket, perfect for placing your keys and cell phone in (I do this all the time when walking or hiking). It also has an attached hood that you can use to better support your sleeping babies head, shield from sun and rain, and/or give more privacy when nursing. That leads to another point
You can easily nurse your baby while he/she is in the front position.
The fabric is durable and easy to clean. The straps and buckles are also durable and well made. Also, each of the buckles has an elastic safety loop. This loop is there to ensure that even if, for some reason, the buckles came undone, the carrier will not loosen and your child will not fall or slip.
I guess the only negative thing that I can think of about this carrier is this
Your baby is always faced towards your body, so there is not forward facing position. My son is fine with this, so I have not had any problems. It is very cozy and comfortable, so maybe this compensates for not being able to face out
Other than that, I do not have one complaint about the Ergo Baby Carrier. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to buy a carrier for their baby. It is well, well worth the money! I cannot imagine my life now without my Ergo Baby Carrier!
